נבהלתי אתמול כשסיפר לי אחיו במשך הדבורים, אשר האב שי' קונה בשבילו כרטיס לנסיעה באני' שכל הצוות שלה הם בני ישראל ונמצאת בדרכה בשבת קדש, ז.א. חילול שבת קדש בפרהסיא של מאות ישראל ר"ל, ונוסף על זה גם - הענין דחילול שם שמים בשם כלל ישראל, כיון שמכריזים אשר האני' וההכנסה שלה - שבתוכם גם הלירות ששילם אביו שי' - נהנה מהם כלל ישראל, ומשלמים הלירות ובעד מלאכות דאורייתא האסורות בשבת ונעשות במכונות האני' ע"י בני ישראל ר"ל ונעשות הן גלוי לעין כל [אלא שישנם כאלה שאין להם כל ידיעה במכונות האני' כמו שהם בפועל עתה, ואומרים היפך המציאות הנראית במוחש, אשר אין מלאכה המחללת את השבת באניות הנמצאות בדרכם במשך יום השבת].
מובן שאמרתי כל הנ"ל גם לאחיו שי' - אף שלא ראיתי תועלת להדגיש בעיניו אשמת האב ששלח לו הכרטיס, אבל כיון שהוא נמצא אצל אביו ומחויב בכבודו - מחויב מטעם זה גם [באופן של כבוד ע"פ ציווי תורתנו] להסבירו את האמור ולמנעו מפעולה כגון דא בעתיד.
פשוט שידוע לי אשר אומרים בשם רב פלוני, שהוא התיר את הדבר. אבל כבר ידוע דברי הרא"ש (ב"ק פ"ד ס"ד) בהלכה כרב באיסורי וכשמואל בממונא, שכיון ששמואל עסק בדיני ממונות יותר מרב, הלכה כמותו במקצוע זה, וכל אותם שאומרים בשמם שמתירים הם את האמור, הרי (לאחרי בקשת סליחתם וכבודם במקומם מונח), כנראה אין להם ידיעה כלל בעבודת המכונות במצב ההווה, ונשענים הם על עדות, ורואים במוחש הקלקלה שנגרמה עי"ז.
I was shocked yesterday when his brother told me during our conversation that the father, may he live, is buying him a ticket for a trip on a ship whose entire crew are Jews and which will be traveling on Shabbat Kodesh. This means public desecration of Shabbat Kodesh by hundreds of Jews, G‑d forbid. In addition, there is also the issue of desecrating the Name of Heaven in the name of all Israel, since it is announced that the ship and its revenue—including the liras paid by his father—benefit all Israel. They pay these liras for melachot de'oraita (Torah-prohibited labors) that are forbidden on Shabbat and are performed by Jews using the ship's machinery, G‑d forbid, and these actions are done openly for all to see. [There are some who have no knowledge at all about how the ship's machinery actually works nowadays and claim—contrary to what is clearly observable—that no labor violating Shabbat occurs on ships traveling during Shabbat.]
It is understood that I told all this also to his brother—even though I saw no benefit in emphasizing to him the father's guilt for sending him the ticket. But since he is with his father and obligated to honor him, he is therefore also obligated [in a respectful manner according to our Torah's command] to explain this matter to him and prevent him from such actions in the future.
It is obvious that I am aware they say in the name of a certain rabbi that he permitted this matter. But it is already known what the Rosh says (Bava Kama chapter 4 section 4): The law follows Rav in prohibitions and Shmuel in monetary matters; since Shmuel was more involved in monetary law than Rav, we follow him in that area. All those who claim permission in their names (with all due respect), apparently have no real knowledge of how these machines operate today and rely on testimony—and we see with our own eyes the damage caused by this.
