Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter and I begin regarding the main issue about your sister, as the chassan told you that you should speak with her. I hope you immediately began acting on this, since she needs time to get used to the idea, and she must also learn the detailed laws—which is not something the chassan can help with for several reasons.

It can be assumed that she finds it difficult, especially as this is true even for those who come into a very religious environment. But obviously, this does not mean the matter should be neglected. I hope that now, recalling our conversation during her visit with me, you will emphasize that she should consider my opinion in general Torah observance and especially in keeping taharah, stressing this with appropriate words until it is actually fulfilled.

May it be G‑d's will that these words come from the heart in a pleasant manner but with proper strength—for then one is successful. If only you would speak (pleasantly and) more firmly with the chassan, you would have more success than you imagine. The proof: he comes from such a family and environment and was not affected—so what could you accomplish? It is well known there are greater things than this; as the Gemara tells about the copper serpent being an object of idol worship that many righteous kings did not remove until Chizkiyahu came and left it for him to distinguish himself. This is true in all times and places.

Especially now his conduct in Torah and mitzvos affects your sister and their building a Jewish home. Particularly since on his wedding day all his sins are forgiven—this shows there is a special drawing from Above and an opportunity to establish themselves on a proper Jewish Torah foundation.

As I have written to many people in various matters: since Torah says "hocheach tochiach" (you shall surely rebuke) even up to rebuke and striking, we understand how much rebuke can accomplish—since even when he has already been rebuked but not struck, Torah still says to continue "hocheach tochiach." Especially since I hope this case is not at all like that G‑d forbid.

I am surprised you did not mention what your sister told you about her conversation here; hopefully you will add this at the next opportunity.

I hope you will also find suitable words to explain to the store owners that what is said about an awakening from Above—that one must use every opportunity (see also Likkutei Torah beginning of Parshas Vayikra (2b))—does not mean an angel with two wings comes shouting "repent!" Rather there are many agents for Hashem; Hashem points out with a finger when one must change and begin following Torah and mitzvos. This too is a sign in this matter: when a law was passed to close stores on Shabbos but some hours remain uncovered by law—it is merely a test giving them an opportunity so that by free choice they choose life and good by keeping their stores closed even during those hours.

Of course, you may mention my name in this matter if you think it will increase your chances of influencing as above.

Being today Yud-Gimmel Tammuz, I hope for you too it is different from all other days—not only by omitting Tachanun (which is only an effect), but mainly because concealments regarding Torah and mitzvos—both general and specific—which unfortunately exist, are transformed into merit on an auspicious day so that good resolutions made today will be successful and continue throughout the year.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that influencing others toward observance requires both heartfelt sincerity and determined effort. Even when obstacles seem great or progress slow, persistent encouragement—delivered kindly but firmly—can open hearts and bring lasting spiritual change.
