במענה על מכתבו - בלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - בו כותב אשר לומד הוא בישיבת..
וכותב איזה סברות בהנוגע להסתדרותו בעתיד הקרוב, ושואל חוות דעתי, באיזה מהן יבחר.
והנה לימוד התורה בימינו אלה באה"ק ת"ו במסגרת ישיבה נוסף על ענין תלמוד תורה בכלל, יש לה תפקיד עיקרי ותועלת הכי גדולה והיא העמדת הלומד על בסיס חזק למען יוכל עמוד בפני הנסיונות דתקופתנו זו ולא יתרשם מהרוחות הבלתי מצויות המנשבות מכל הצדדים, ואשר בעוה"ר לא רק שאינן פוחתות אלא אדרבה, וע"ד מרז"ל אין לך יום וכו', מזה מובן שלא רק זה שבוחר לדרכו בחיים משרה בקדש כמו רב ר"י ושו"ב וכיו"ב מוכרח ללמוד איזה שנים בישיבה, אלא כאו"א מבני הנוער החפץ באמת לחיות חיים של לומד תורה ומקיים מצות כרצון בורא העולם זקוק הוא לחיות שנים אחדות במסגרת האמורה, ואדרבה, כיון שאינו בוחר במשרה בקדש יש מקום לומר שהנסיונות שלו יהיו קשים יותר ומוכרח הוא יותר עוד באלו השנים הקובעים את צורתו הרוחנית להמצא במסגרת ישיבה מבלי לבלבל את עצמו בלימודים אחרים מבלי להיות באוירה אחרת, וכל זה אין זה שאלה לרכוש עוד ידיעות בתורה ולהעשות למדן יותר, אלא נוגע ג"כ לקיום המצות כפשוטן.
ועוד למודעי אשר דבר המשנה אל תאמין בעצמך פשוט הוא שתקפו הוא גם בימינו אלה, ובפרט בהנוגע להנוער שעדיין לא יצא מחוץ לד' אמות של בית הוריו או מחוץ לד' אמות של תורה ותפלה, שאי אפשר שיוכל לשער מראש תוקף הנסיון כלפיו יעמוד אחרי איזה שנים ולהחליט אם כבר מחוסן הוא ככל המצטרך להתגבר על כל העלמות והסתרים.
ישנם מקשים על הנ"ל שהשנים בישיבה מאחרות את התחלת ההסתדרות בפרנסה לעצמו, אבל סוף סוף הקב"ה הוא הזן ומפרנס לכל, ולא על הלחם לבדו יחי' האדם וצריך הוא בזמן המתאים לבסס את עמדתו הרוחנית השלום הנפשי שלו, ושיהיו מיוסדים ככל הצורך וכשהיסוד חזק ואיתן אפשר ליהנות מהבנין שעל יסוד זה ולשפרו ולשכללו, משא"כ כאשר היסוד רעוע הוא וכו'.
ויהי רצון אשר יחליט בטוב לפניו באמת, זאת אומרת להקדיש איזה שנים ללימודי קדש ובאוירה ובסביבה קדושה, ואז יצליח בעתיד וגם בגשמיות.

In response to your letter—which did not indicate when it was written—in which you write that you are studying in yeshiva... and you present various ideas regarding your future arrangements, asking my opinion on which to choose.
The study of Torah in our times in Eretz HaKodesh, within the framework of a yeshiva, in addition to the general value of Torah study, has a primary role and the greatest benefit: it establishes the student on a strong foundation so he can withstand the challenges of our era and not be influenced by the unusual winds blowing from all sides. Unfortunately, not only are these challenges not diminishing, but on the contrary—as our Sages say: "There is no day..." From this it is understood that not only those who choose a sacred profession such as rabbi, rosh yeshiva, shochet and similar must study several years in yeshiva; rather, every young person who truly wishes to live as a Torah scholar and fulfill mitzvos as G‑d desires needs to spend several years within this framework. In fact, since he is not choosing a sacred profession, there is reason to say his challenges will be even greater and he needs these formative years even more—to be in the yeshiva environment without distracting himself with other studies or being in another atmosphere. All this is not just about acquiring more Torah knowledge or becoming more learned; it also directly affects fulfilling mitzvos simply.
Additionally, let it be known that the teaching from Pirkei Avos—"Do not trust yourself..."—is obviously still fully relevant today, especially regarding youth who have not yet left the four cubits of their parents' home or those of Torah and prayer. It is impossible to predict ahead of time how strong the challenges will be after some years and decide if one is already fortified enough to overcome all concealments and obstacles.
Some object that these years in yeshiva delay starting one's own livelihood. But ultimately, Hashem is the One Who sustains and provides for all; man does not live by bread alone. At the appropriate time one must establish his spiritual standing and inner peace so they are properly founded. When the foundation is strong and solid one can enjoy and improve upon what is built upon it; but if the foundation is weak etc., then...
May it be G‑d's will that you make a truly good decision—that is, to dedicate several years to sacred studies in a holy atmosphere and environment—and then you will succeed in your future endeavors both spiritually and materially.
