The Dispute with the Fund-Raiser over His Percentage: The Institution Does More for the Collector Than the Collector Does for It

This letter, on a dispute with the institution's fund-raiser, hopes they will reach a compromise and that he will continue his work. It is surprising that he insists on his percentage when the institution is one of pure Torah education; as the Sages' saying implies, the institution does more for the collector than the collector does for it.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

After the interval, your letter of 21 Cheshvan was received. As for what you write about the dispute with the fund-raiser, may he live — surely they will reach a compromise between them and the fund-raiser will continue his work — it is surprising that he insists on his claim regarding the percentage, at a time when what is involved is an educational institution conducted in pure holiness. It is understood, from the well-known saying of our Sages, of blessed memory,[1] that more than the collector does for the institution, the institution does for the collector...

Notes

[1] The saying of our Sages (מרז"ל הידוע): Vayikra Rabbah 34:8: יותר ממה שבעל הבית עושה עם העני, העני עושה עם בעל הבית, "More than the householder does for the poor man, the poor man does for the householder."
