Shalom u'Vrachah!
In answer to your letter of Thursday. It is surprising that there is so long a gap between one letter and the next, and the brevity regarding matters about which you were told to write at length — that is, matters of Torah and mitzvos, and matters that concern the camp of chassidim in particular.
Regarding what you write, reasons and explanations for your being occupied in the work of a shochet u'bodek and refraining from working in "my own vineyard"[1] as required: I have already said my word in several places and to several of our fellow chassidim, that with excuses offered in such cases — besides the doubt how far they are truly correct, whether all of them or only a few — even if you will say that the excuses are one hundred percent right, what does this help with regard to the inner and true mission of each and every Jew, which is an explicit Mishnah: "I was created to serve my Maker"[2]? And as the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek declared, "we are day laborers" — to illuminate. For even with true duress according to Torah, the ruling is known that we do not say it is as if he had done it. And although, according to what is explained regarding the level of a proper servant, needless to say, it does not concern him through whom the master's affairs are done, so long as they are done properly — it is greatly to be questioned whether any of us has reached such a level of service. The test of this is whether also in material matters and bodily matters he gives way in the manner described, or only in spiritual matters and matters of the soul...
With blessing for good tidings in all the above.
Notes
[1] My own vineyard (כרמי שלי): after Shir HaShirim 1:6, "They made me keeper of the vineyards; my own vineyard I have not kept" — one's own inner service.
[2] I was created to serve my Maker (אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני): the Mishnah at the end of Kiddushin, Kiddushin 82a.
