במענה על מכתבו - בלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - בו כותב על שמקטנותו התרועע עם נער אחד יתום, אבל אח"כ גבה טורא ביניהו והנ"ל נתרחק מהסביבה החרדית בה נתחנכו ונתגדלו וכו', ויודע שעתה מסתובב הוא בסביבה חפשית, ומתייעץ בעצמו איך להשפיע עליו וכו'.
ופלא הקור רוח בו נכתב כל הנ"ל, אף שהדבר נוגע בהצלת נפש אחת מישראל לחיי העולם הבא וגם לחיי העולם הזה, וגודל ענין כזה אין צריך ביאור, ומובן ופשוט שבהקדם האפשרי עליו להתחיל בהשפעה על האמור באופן הכי יעיל אשר לא כל האישים והמצבים שוים בזה כמובן, אבל בודאי כשיתייעץ בזה עם אלו הנמצאים על אתר והמכירים בתנאי המצב ויטכסו עצה ויקוים כמ"ש ותשועה ברוב יועץ, וההקדם בכל זה ישובח וגם מוכרח, כיון שכל רגע וכל יום הם אבדה שאינה חוזרת, וכבר ידוע פסק תוה"ק לעולם יראה עצמו שקול וכל העולם כולו שקול וע"י ענין אחד יכול להכריע עצמו וכל העולם לכף זכות וכו' ובהתבוננות קלה שההכרעה יכולה להיות ממש ברגע ודוחה הפעולה מאיזה סיבה שתהי', הרי תסמרנה שערות הראש מהתוצאות האפשריות מדיחוי זה, והאריכות בזה אך למותר, ויהי רצון שכאמור יתחיל תיכף בפעולה ההתחלה עכ"פ ויהי' בהצלחה.

In response to your letter—without indication of when it was written—in which you describe how from your youth you associated with an orphaned boy, but later a barrier arose between you and he distanced himself from the religious environment in which you both were raised, etc., and you know that now he is in a secular environment. You seek advice on how to influence him, etc.
It is astonishing how coolly all this is written, even though it concerns saving a Jewish soul for the World to Come as well as for this world. The magnitude of such a matter needs no explanation. It is clear and simple that as soon as possible you must begin influencing him in the most effective way—of course, not all people or situations are alike in this regard. Certainly, if you consult with those present locally who know the circumstances and together devise a plan—as it says: 'salvation comes through many counselors'—the sooner this is done the better and indeed necessary, since every moment and every day is an irretrievable loss. It is already known from Torah law: one should always see oneself and the entire world as evenly balanced, and through one action can tip oneself and the whole world to merit, etc. With just a little contemplation that this tipping point can happen literally in a moment—and delaying action for any reason causes one's hair to stand on end at the possible consequences of such delay—there is no need to elaborate further.
May it be G‑d's will that, as mentioned above, you immediately begin at least initial efforts and may they be successful.
You surely know about the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—of blessed memory—in Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya; make sure to keep them from now on at least.
