Mr. Yitzchak Koren.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter in due time and was pleased to read that you participated in the celebration of the bright day of Yud-Tes Kislev in Kfar Chabad. Although I had already heard reports about this from others, hearing it directly from someone who participated and his impressions in his own words is not the same as hearing it secondhand.

You surely know the common expression among Chabad Chassidim describing Yud-Tes Kislev as "Rosh Hashanah for Chassidus." The explanation is that just as the head gives life to the whole body, so too must the "head" of the year impart its spirit to the entire year. Similarly, Rosh Hashanah for Chassidus should draw additional vitality, light, and enthusiasm into all other days of the year from the inspiration and mood experienced on this day.

It is well known in such matters what our Sages said: "Even one who merely passes by a perfumer's shop absorbs its scent," how much more so someone who participates not just in passing. My hope—based on our conversation when you were here—is that your participation was more than just passing through.

Regarding the main question you raised in your letter about mixing religion with politics (in foreign terms: partisanship), this painful issue has already been discussed extensively. However, in my opinion, correcting this should begin not as you wrote in your letter but from the other side.

To explain: Unfortunately and sadly, not only is religion mixed with politics but also anti-religion; meaning certain circles—including some with significant influence—have introduced fighting against religion into their party's agenda even though there is no ideological or logical connection between these matters. In fact, at certain points they contradict each other. It is understood that they had to introduce this fight unofficially and even more so for various reasons mentioned above. Nevertheless, they use party mechanisms and influence to wage this battle—not always by proper means—as is common in party struggles.

The reason I say correction must begin from the other side is simple: quantitatively they are more numerous and their organizational mechanism is stronger; therefore they should take the first step. There is also a deeper reason: as the folk saying goes, "No one ever lost out from a kosher piece of meat—even one who doesn't care for salted meat for an hour," whereas the opposite is not true.

Certainly for you there is no need to elaborate further; I only wish to add—though perhaps you suspect me of bias regarding this issue—that I believe it would be a blessing for those parties on that side if they removed fighting against religion from their activities—not only a blessing for the World to Come but also simply regarding their party's development and depth of issues.

I will conclude regarding your letter's ending where you apologize for intruding into 'the palace,' etc.—there is no need to apologize! On the contrary: it is well known that Lubavitch-Chabad's approach has always been that all descendants of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov are religious at their soul's core; the only difference lies in whether there is a barrier between inner and outer self—whether it's an iron wall or silk curtain with many windows or none at all. Therefore you did not intrude into religion's palace—you have been there since your soul descended below despite all life's upheavals you've experienced.

Moreover, since you can influence many people—even a small effort in a positive direction will succeed greatly because merit of many helps him. If there are any developments regarding this issue I am interested to hear details and thank you in advance for your effort.

With honor and blessings for a kosher and joyous Pesach holiday and good news in general matters with health.

Summary
