Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 8th of Adar, in which you write about your livelihood situation and your demand regarding... which has led you to consider leaving your position there, etc.
I have already written to several of Anash, and surely you have also seen at least one of my aforementioned letters, that the time has come when the truth should no longer be concealed. All those who have merited to take part in the institutions or activities of my father-in-law, the Rebbe—one does not need to beg them. For it is one of two things: either they also recognize that this is for their own benefit, or if they do not wish to admit this and hold the view that they are doing a favor for my father-in-law the Rebbe—and through him for all our holy leaders, and through them for the Holy One Blessed Be He and His retinue—then even rebuke will not help. And although it is clear how much compassion there is for them (for this too falls under 'You shall surely rebuke'), everything has its limit—especially in our times when every moment is precious for action.
If even the young in years or those who did not merit to be educated within Tomchei Temimim require pampering and coddling—as explained in Rambam's commentary on Mishnayot and brought in Chassidus regarding educating a child—then those who merited to study in Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim and became heads of Chassidic families in Israel gain nothing from rebuke or pampering. Attempts to persuade them with words are ineffective because after a short time they revert again to their opinion, and there is no end to persuasion and pampering—while time could be used more productively. Furthermore, the work done between one complaint and another lacks true taste and appearance...
At least once it must be said as it is: The intent is that perhaps they will begin trying to look at others as well—that others too have ten soul powers including Chabad; on the other hand, they too have emotional traits that can overwhelm intellect. Thus, sometimes one may be mistaken while his friends are correct; there is no test here except following majority rule (azlinan basar ruba). After contemplating this for an appropriate time according to one's nature—and doing so sincerely—one will surely begin to see with his own eyes what is written: "Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace," and thus will join together with other Anash in these matters...
Again I repeat what was said before: No one is being begged to participate in the work of my father-in-law the Rebbe—and likewise not others—but on the other hand, there is great compassion upon them, especially regarding those who apparently live decades under a mistaken impression that they are doing a favor for our holy leaders rather than vice versa. The consequences of such an attitude toward this work are thus understood. Therefore he—and everyone—should try explaining the truth to themselves once or twice or several times; may it be G‑d's will that they choose the better portion...
With blessings for a kosher and joyous Pesach holiday,
In the name of my father-in-law the Rebbe shlita,
Mazkir
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that involvement in his projects benefits those participating more than anyone else; viewing it as merely doing a favor misses its true value. Honest self-reflection leads us to recognize where real benefit lies.
