Forgiveness When Apology Is Offered During Elul

The Rebbe writes about the importance of granting forgiveness when someone sincerely apologizes, especially during the month of Elul, a time for soul-searching. He emphasizes that refusing to forgive contradicts Torah and Chassidus teachings, and requests a positive update.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

It has been some time since I received reports regarding what happened between you and ... shiy', and as I heard, they asked you for forgiveness and pardon, but apparently you did not respond to them.

If this report is accurate, it is certainly unnecessary to remind you of the law in our Torah of life regarding a person who has been offended—when forgiveness is requested from him for the offense—and all the more so what is brought about this in many places in Chassidus. This applies especially now as we are in the month of Elul, which is the month of accounting for the soul regarding the entire past year. When one makes an accounting of his conduct in thought, speech, and action over the past months, despite everything he asks from the King of kings, Hakadosh Baruch Hu, that He forgive and pardon and atone for all this so that no trace remains G‑d forbid. Moreover, as stated in Iggeres HaTeshuvah by our master the Alter Rebbe chapter 2:2, he should be appeased to see the face of the king etc., it is self-understood how such a request works when one behaves in a completely opposite manner. And regarding an offense from flesh and blood—from a person like oneself etc.—there is no need to elaborate on something so simple and obvious. See also Iggeres HaKodesh by our master the Alter Rebbe section 25.

It is possible that the above report is not correct, and I await good news in reply in any case.

With blessings for a good inscription and sealing for the new year, on behalf of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that one must forgive others who sincerely apologize—especially during Elul—just as we ask G‑d for forgiveness. Refusing to forgive contradicts both Torah law and Chassidus values.
