במענה על מכתבו מכ"ו אדר. נהניתי לקרות בו מהטבת מצב בריאותו, ובטח קבל מכתבי מכבר. ויה"ר שבקרוב יחזור לאיתנו בגשמיות ולאיתנו ברוחניות, וע"פ המבואר בכ"מ בדא"ח, מיוסד על מאמר רבנו הזקן ד"ה משכיל לאיתן האזרחי, והועתק בקונטרס לימוד החסידות בתחלתו.
בשאלתו אם להטבת ההנהגה ולעבודה כדבעי מספיק הלימוד בספרים ושיחות וכו' - הנה מובן שלא כן הוא, אלא מוכרח לכאו"א שיהי' מי עומד על גבו, והרי כבר נאמר עשה לך רב, וכידוע בדיוק לשון עשי' שהוא מלשון מעשין על צדקה לשון כפי', היינו אפילו אם אין התלמיד רוצה בכך. ובפרט כשהמדובר בענינים שתורת החסידות מדברת אודותם, שהם ענינים דקים לפי"ע ובמילא הטעות בזה עלולה יותר ומזקת יותר. וידוע ג"כ הפירוש בדברי משה, רבן של כל ישראל, כתוב זאת זכרון בספר (ואעפ"כ) ושים באזני יהושע. מובן ג"כ שאין יוצאים ידי חבתו בועשה לך רב, אלא שצ"ל ג"כ וקנה לך חבר, היינו שיהי' מי שיוכל לגלות לו ולפניו נגעי לבבו, וכפתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר האמצעי, שעי"ז הנה שני נפה"א נלחמים על נפש הבהמית אחד.
בהנוגע לשאלתו שכותב אודות קדושת כו' הנה כמה נוהגים בימים שלפני הנשואין ללמוד בראשית חכמה שער הקדושה שני הפרקים האחרונים, וה"ה בנוגע לשאלתו.

In response to your letter from the 26th of Adar. I was pleased to read about the improvement in your health, and you have surely already received my previous letter. May it be His will that you soon return to full strength both physically and spiritually, as explained in many places in Chassidus, based on the teaching of our master the Alter Rebbe on "Maskil L'Eisan HaEzrachi," which is quoted at the beginning of the booklet Limud HaChassidus.
Regarding your question whether studying books and sichos alone is sufficient for proper conduct and service: it is clear that this is not so. Rather, it is necessary for everyone to have someone overseeing them, as it is already stated: "Aseh lecha Rav" (Make for yourself a Rav). It is well known that the wording "Aseh" (make) implies compulsion, as in compelling one to give tzedakah—even if the student does not want this. This applies all the more when dealing with matters discussed in Chassidus, which are subtle topics; therefore, mistakes are more likely and can be more damaging.
It is also known how Moshe Rabbeinu said: "Write this as a remembrance in a book (and nevertheless) place it in Yehoshua's ears." It is also understood that fulfilling "Aseh lecha Rav" alone does not suffice; one must also fulfill "U'kneh lecha chaver" (acquire for yourself a friend)—meaning someone to whom you can reveal your heart's concerns. As the Mitteler Rebbe said: through this, two G‑dly souls fight together against one animal soul.
Regarding your question about holiness: many have the custom before marriage to study the last two chapters of Shaar HaKedushah in Reishis Chochmah. The same applies regarding your question.
