Practical Mitzvah Observance and Spiritual Success

The Rebbe writes that just as speaking about food without eating does not nourish the body, talking about mitzvos without performing them does not strengthen the soul. He urges the recipient to begin practical mitzvah observance for true spiritual and material success.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter—without a date—where you write about what you and your family have experienced and that you do not see success in your affairs, etc., concluding that in your soul you are a Jew who wants to fulfill the commandments of our Torah, but you are not observant and do not keep Shabbos, etc.

Just as with physical life: if a person talks day and night about believing in the benefits of food and wanting to receive and eat it, as long as he does not actually eat, his words will not benefit his body. Over time he will weaken until eventually he will not even have the strength to speak about the benefits of food. The same is true regarding the life of the soul: even if one frequently says he wants to fulfill mitzvos and speaks about their benefit, as long as he does not actually do them, his soul does not become stronger. Since it lacks what it needs, it weakens over time—just as described above regarding the body.

Therefore, there is no need to look for other reasons for lack of success in your affairs; even just lacking mitzvah observance is enough to explain this lack of success. Even though we see people who do not observe mitzvos yet succeed, we do not know the calculations of Hashem—who receives reward earlier or later and why this differs. Since you yourself write that you believe in Torah, it is already written in Torah—in the Ten Commandments—about the necessity of keeping Shabbos and the reward connected to it; likewise regarding other practical mitzvos even if you did not mention them in your letter.

If you will heed my advice: immediately have all mezuzos in your home checked to ensure they are kosher according to halachah; begin putting on tefillin every weekday as required; pray at least Shema and Shemoneh Esrei; immediately institute kosher food in your home—all this in addition to keeping Shabbos.

Since you mention Haraha"ch Yonah shiyichyeh Eidelkopf in your letter, surely he will help you with all these matters mentioned above and also show you how to put on tefillin, etc., etc. I am confident that when you do this, within a short time you will see success in your affairs.

Awaiting good news and with blessings for a kesivah vachasimah tovah (to be inscribed and sealed for good), on behalf of the Rebbe shlita—mazkir (secretary).

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that only actual performance of mitzvos brings spiritual vitality and success. Good intentions alone are insufficient; practical steps like kosher observance and tefillin lead to real change both spiritually and materially.
