Maintaining Bodily Health as a Path in Serving Hashem

The Rebbe writes that keeping the body healthy and whole is itself a way of serving Hashem, not through fasts or self-affliction. He encourages continued spiritual growth and emphasizes that bodily strength supports the natural soul, referencing chassidic sources.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the eve of Rosh Chodesh Adar II, in which you share good news about your improved spiritual state, may Hashem grant you to continue increasing in this. Certainly, the path to this is not through fasts and self-afflictions, as is also explained in the maamar "Basi L'Gani" 5713—that having a healthy and complete body is itself one of the ways of serving Hashem. The statement that 'bodily strength is weakness for the soul' refers to the natural soul and the animal soul (and this teaching is based on the maamar "Basi L'Gani" of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal). See also in Sefer HaToldos of Admor Maharash at the end of page 72...

With a blessing that his mother should live and receive much chassidic nachas from all her children in good health.

In the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that maintaining one's physical health is itself a form of serving Hashem. True spiritual growth comes not through self-denial but by ensuring bodily well-being, which supports one's service and connection to G‑d.
