Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive news from your mother, may she live, that your son had a daughter born to him. May Hashem Yisbarach help that the parents should raise her in a good manner, in the Jewish way, with health and happiness.

It is self-understood that in our times parents must speak with their children even about matters which once were never questioned by anyone. This only increases the obligation and strengthens it further.

I mean to say that one must influence children so that their home is conducted as a Jewish home should be: a kosher kitchen, observing Shabbos, observing Taharas HaMishpachah (mikvah), etc. In most cases this is not achieved at once; however, this should not prevent parents from speaking several times about it—just as when one sees a child wanting to harm their body, all means are taken to prevent it. All the more so when one sees a child wanting to harm both body and soul—one must speak repeatedly until the message is absorbed by the children.

And in order for this to be easier and quicker, almost always it is better to use the best approach—not through arguing but by asking in an appropriate manner and with proper explanations. Above all, one should clarify that living in the Jewish way is not doing a favor for the Aibershter; rather, if one wants a good and happy life, a Jew must conduct themselves according to Torah and mitzvos.

As for seeing Jews who do not observe these things yet seem to live well—there are two points here: Firstly, it is hard to know what really goes on with someone else; regarding negative things they are ashamed to tell others—especially when they know they themselves are at fault due to their conduct against Torah. Secondly, as Torah tells us, Hashem Yisbarach has much patience and wants to give a Jew maximum time so perhaps he will eventually grasp the truth and set himself on the right path. Therefore it can sometimes take years before one sees the negative outcome (G‑d forbid) of not living according to Torah. But in order to ensure and prevent such negativity (G‑d forbid), it is better to act now—even if one thinks that any negative result would only come after many years.

I do not want to elaborate too much so as not to burden you. I hope what was mentioned above will suffice—that you should act energetically to influence your children with closeness and in an appropriate manner, bringing them closer to Yiddishkeit. May Hashem Yisbarach help you.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that persistent loving guidance helps children embrace Torah values. Even if others seem happy without observance, true fulfillment comes from living according to Torah and mitzvos—and parents play a crucial role in this process.
