זה עתה נתקבל מכתבם מעש"ק תרומה. בו כותבים ע"ד אי הבנה בכוונתי בענין הבחינות... פשיטא שאין כוונתי כלל וכלל למעט בדמותו של מי שהוא, אבל כיון שברצון כולנו לעמוד בקישור איש לרעהו, וקישורו - וכמו כל הענינים - של איש הישראלי הרי זה תלוי בתורה ומצות, ובאלה הנמצאים בכותלי ישיבה ה"ז בעיקר בקו התורה, לכן רצוני לדעת ברור, עד כמה שאפשר, מצבו של כל אחד הן בתורת הנגלה והן בתורת החסידות, וכמ"ש מראש - אין ידיעות אלו אלא בשבילי.
פשיטא שאלו הפונים מזמן לזמן במכתביהם אלי, אין כל מקום לתאר מצבם ששואלים אודותו באופן שאינו מתאים אל המציאות. ועוד שאזי גם המענה שלי לא תמיד יתאים אל מה שברצוני לענות, וכידוע מאמר השגור בפי החסידים: ווי מען פרעגט - אזוי ענטפערט מען. בתור הקדמה לכל הענינים שפונים אלי, הן בהוה והן בעתיד. אלו שזיכם השי"ת והעמידם בקרן אורה זו תורה - הנה ע"פ הנ"ל נכון שאדע מצב השואל בידיעותיו בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות. במילא מובן אשר גם ידיעה זו צריכה להיות מתאמת אל האמת...

It is obvious that I have absolutely no intention whatsoever to diminish anyone's stature. However, since it is our collective desire to maintain a connection with one another—and such connection, like all matters for a Jewish person, depends on Torah and mitzvos—and for those within the walls of a yeshivah this is especially along the lines of Torah study, I therefore wish to know clearly, as much as possible, the situation of each individual both in Nigleh (revealed Torah) and in Chassidus. As I have stated from the outset—this information is solely for myself.
It is obvious that those who correspond with me from time to time should not describe the situation being asked about in a way that does not match reality. Furthermore, if they do so, my response will not always fit what I would like to answer; as is well known from the saying often repeated among Chassidim: "As one asks—that is how one answers." This serves as an introduction to all matters brought before me, both now and in the future.
Those whom Hashem has merited to be placed in this bright corner of Torah—it follows from the above that it is proper for me to know the questioner's situation in his knowledge of Nigleh and Chassidus. Therefore, it is understood that this information must also be aligned with the truth...
