... ובקשר עם ימי חנוכה הבע"ל ולברכה עלינו ועל כל ישראל, חפצי להדגיש רק אחד מהרמזים שישנם בנרות חנוכה, והוא:
מצות נרות אצל ישראל, הם: נרות בית המקדש, נרות שבת, ונרות חנוכה, ההפרש דנרות חנוכה לשאר הנרות הוא, שנרות בית המקדש ונרות שבת צריכים להדליק בעוד החמה זורחת, וגם באותו המספר פעם בפעם, משא"כ נרות חנוכה צריכים להדליק דוקא משתשקע החמה, ומיום ליום צריכים להוסיף עוד אור - נר -. והא בהא תליא, דכאשר בחוץ ג"כ אור יכולים להסתפק להמשיך באור של תורה ומצות ע"ד הרגיל, וע"פ הרוב יכולה להספיק, והתורה על הרוב תדבר, משא"כ כשהחמה - כי שמש ומגן ה' אלקים - אינה זורחת בגלוי בהסביבה, אז אין להסתפק שיהי' עובד השי"ת היום כמו אתמול ומחר כמו היום, לפי שאז לא רק שלא יבקע החשך כ"א גם סכנה ישנה שהחשך יחדור גם למקום שעד עתה הי' אור, ולכן מוכרח בכל יום להתוסף עוד אור, וע"ד מאמר רז"ל מעלין בקדש. והנמשל די בהיר ואין דורש ביאור נוסף.
והשי"ת יצליח לכל אחד מאתנו להאיר חלקו בנפשו בגופו ובעולם מתוך הרחבה.

... In connection with the upcoming days of Chanukah, may they be blessed for us and all Israel, I wish to emphasize just one of the hints found in the Chanukah candles: The mitzvah candles among Israel are the candles of the Beis HaMikdash, Shabbos candles, and Chanukah candles. The difference between Chanukah candles and the others is that the Beis HaMikdash and Shabbos candles must be lit while the sun is still shining, and always in the same number each time; whereas Chanukah candles must specifically be lit after sunset, and each day one must add more light—a candle. These matters are connected: when there is also light outside, it is sufficient to continue with the usual light of Torah and mitzvos; most of the time this suffices, as Torah speaks for most cases. But when the sun—'for a sun and a shield is Hashem Elokim'—does not shine openly in one's environment, then it is not enough to serve Hashem today as yesterday or tomorrow as today. For then not only will darkness not be pierced, but there is even a danger that darkness will penetrate places that until now were filled with light. Therefore it is necessary to add more light every day, as our Sages said: "Ma'alin b'kodesh" (we ascend in holiness). The lesson is quite clear and needs no further explanation.
May Hashem grant success to each of us to illuminate his portion—in his soul, his body, and his world—with abundance.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that during times of spiritual darkness we must increase our efforts in spreading light—adding more goodness each day—just as we add a candle each night of Chanukah. This continual increase ensures that darkness does not encroach upon areas already illuminated.
