במענה על מכתבו... לפלא שאינו מזכיר מאומה בענין השפעתו בקהלתו, בהחזקת התורה והפצת היהדות, אשר בטח אינו שוכח אשר סו"ס זהו תכלית העיקר של משרת הרבנות, וענין הפרנסה שבזה הוא טפל בערך לתכלית הנ"ל, והאריכות בזה בטח אך למותר, ומובן ג"כ שעיקר הפעולה היא בעניני חינוך הכשר, הן של הקטנים והן של הגדולים, ועיקר העיקרים להסבירם אשר העיקר הוא המעשה בפועל, היינו קיום המצות בפועל ממש בחיים היום יומיים...

In response to your letter... It is surprising that you do not mention anything regarding your influence in your community, in supporting Torah and spreading Judaism. Surely you have not forgotten that ultimately this is the primary purpose of the rabbinate position, and the matter of livelihood in this context is secondary compared to this main goal. There is certainly no need to elaborate on this further. It is also understood that the main activity should be in matters of proper education, both for children and adults, and above all to explain to them that the main thing is actual deed—that is, fulfilling mitzvos in actual daily life...
