Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 13th of Menachem Av, along with three checks. Please inform me in whose name to send the receipts—whether in the name of the synagogue or private individuals—and for what amount. Many thanks in advance for your efforts regarding all the above.
Regarding the content of your letter: In my letter from Erev Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, I did not write as an advocate for a fundraising campaign for an extremely necessary institution among other very necessary institutions. Rather, I wrote as a reminder and to awaken us all to our duty and privilege—each and every one of us—to take upon ourselves the burden of expenses for Melach, Machaneh, and Kehot. My revered father-in-law, the Rebbe hk"m, personally took it upon himself to find the necessary means for their expenses and arranged a large part of his secret work through them.
There are several ways in which one connects to another: a student to his teacher, a chassid to his Rebbe—and there are various levels within this. In general, connection is through following his ways. This divides into three types from lower to higher, corresponding to the ways of the one being connected to: (a) One who asks or instructs others to act—the connection is by fulfilling this command or instruction; (b) One who acts together with others—the connection is by participating as well; (c) One who acts himself—the connection is by personally taking action when given the opportunity.
In my letter from Erev Rosh Chodesh Tammuz I sought to awaken those chassidim connected or related to my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe hk"m, that now there is an opportunity for connection on the third level—a connection of nefesh, ruach, neshamah, chayah, yechidah—with our Nasi and leader in this generation: my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe hk"m.
After all this, you can judge for yourself what impression your reply made on me. My intention here is not about the sum—which you apologize for—since our Sages taught (end of Menachos): "Whether one gives more or less—the main thing is that he directs his heart." "With all your might" means your "very muchness" at this moment—even if for another person or at another time it would not be considered "all very much."
I am referring to knowing that when my letter was read—“and it is impossible to be exempt without doing anything—we made a joint collection together with assistance for so-and-so who had already approached us for help.” A little holds much.
What I labored over for some time—to explain first to myself how to grasp connection with Rabbeim; then how best to express these ideas regarding one approach; then choosing what to include in my aforementioned letter (and some leftovers in this letter)—in just two lines of your reply you informed me of your appreciation on these matters and gave a full answer: both what can be understood between the lines and even somewhat what I could have written in a second letter.
Our Sages said: "Their minds are not alike." Apparently sometimes they can even be opposites.
Please extend warm regards to all members of your group.
Signed with blessing and wishes for all good,
Menachem Schneerson

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true connection comes through personal involvement and heartfelt effort. Every individual's contribution—no matter its size—is valued when given sincerely toward supporting holy institutions.
