B"H, the 3rd of Menachem Av.
May Hashem be with you. Haraha"ch vavac"h iy"a nu"m etc. Mehoramz.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your two letters with the attached sheets regarding the usual halachic rulings from Reb Harariyah HaLevi and the book Mekor Chaim for review and timely return. Thank you for the above.
Regarding Melach and Machane Yisrael: if these matters could cause any detriment to your service or standing, it is obvious you must be careful about this.
Concerning compiling a digest of regular halachic rulings—in general, in such matters it is difficult to determine precisely what is most necessary to include. Certainly not all places are alike either. On the other hand, even if it is not arranged according to a strict system, it brings benefit by preventing someone from transgressing certain prohibitions mentioned therein and encourages fulfilling required actions.
I asked Reb Chaim Mordechai Aizik Hodakov to review the above in order to make comments, and I am enclosing this. In my opinion, the references should be placed at the bottom so as not to confuse the simple reader. The name could be suggested as: Kuntres Likutei Dinim. Kuntres Aleph. Or Noytige Anweisungen Far Yeder Tog (Necessary Instructions for Every Day), First Issue, etc.
An acquaintance once pointed out to me that even among Anash there is insufficient attention given to matters of guarding one's speech; perhaps it would be worthwhile to include something on this topic as well—at least briefly.
You wrote that because you were distressed you do not get involved in...—are these two things really equal in your eyes? Temporary personal distress versus harm (in your view) that could affect several years or an entire lifetime of a student or many people? I am astonished at you—doubly so.
Regarding your question about kindergarten: I spoke at length here with guests from Montreal and surely they conveyed things as they are. In summary: Lubavitch and Hungary differ on this matter—the latter held by separation while Lubavitch does not follow this approach. Of course, this does not mean joining in everything; but the general principle is to bring others along with oneself—even if this means moving more slowly as a result.
The separation between upper waters and lower waters is called "machlokes" (division), and therefore it was not said "ki tov" (that it was good). See the language of our Sages (Bereishis Rabbah ch. 4:6): "A dispute that is for the improvement of the world and its settlement (the Torah testifies that it is for the world's benefit), yet still there is no 'ki tov' about it." It is known that there is a rule: one may join another in committing a minor prohibition in order to save him from a major one (Eruvin 32b and Tosafos there; Sdei Chemed Klalim V:26). The Chassidic expression interprets this as one putting himself at risk to save his fellow. There is much more to elaborate on this.
I told them that after kindergarten hours they should establish a cheder or similar arrangement. Likewise, other matters should be done as possible without forcing Canadian children...
Regarding Sefer Nishmas Chaim—I have not heard anything about it. In general, he has great merit for strengthening belief in reincarnation; but his book mixes chaff with grain—as anyone who examines it will see.
I have Sefer Likutei Maharich here; I have benefited from several notes—sources for customs and similar matters.
A booklet in Yiddish about family purity was printed some time ago in Warsaw (apparently by Agudas HaRabbonim), and surely you can find a copy—perhaps print from it (with changes according to local conditions and Hungarian customs).
With wishes for all good blessings and proper health for your household; from time to time please inform me of such matters.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that practical benefit often outweighs rigid systems when guiding communities or compiling digests. He stresses unity while respecting differences and urges sensitivity when making decisions affecting many people’s lives or education.
