אל חברי הנשיאות של הועידה הארצית הכ"ח של אגודת ישראל באמריקה

במענה על מכתבם מיום כ' סיון השי"ת:
כל שאלה בחיי עם ישראל, קלה כחמורה, דורשת שימת לב רצינית מצד כל ועידה הנקראת לדון אודות עניני תורה ויהדות. אמנם בזמן מן הזמנים עולות על הפרק שאלות כאלה, אשר יש בהם משום פקוח נפשות, בגשמיות או ברוחניות, פקוח נפשות יחידים או גם של רבים, ובמילא דורשות המה שימת לב מיוחדה וריכוז כל הכחות בזריזות יתרה לעבודת ההצלה.
שאלה כזאת היא כעת שאלת חינוך הילדים העולים לארצנו הקדושה והצלתם מכפירה וכלי' רוחנית ח"ו.
כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע הכ"מ, מנהיג ישראל על מפלגתי, ואשר כל עבודתו, במסירות נפש, במשך עשיריות בשנים היתה ממעל לגדר מפלגה, הנה בכל מקרה של סכנה ח"ו לעם ישראל, השתדל לנצל את כל החוגים שאפשר להועיל על ידם להצלת המצב, ובשעתו התחיל בריכוז כל הכחות להצלת הילדים הנ"ל.
והגם שכבר נראו פירות מהעבודה הזאת, הנה מצב הילדים די מסוכן הוא, ושאלת חינוכם והדרכתם עומדת בכל חומרה.
ואשר לכן, כל אסיפה של יהודים הדואגים לטובת כלל ישראל צריכה להיות במה אשר בה ישמע קול ברמה, קול דרישה חזקה לפתרון השאלה המדאיבה הנ"ל בהקדם היותר אפשרי, וקבלת החלטות לאחוז בכל האמצעים האפשריים להסיר כל המעצורים ואבני נגף מאיזה צד שהוא, המונעים ושוללים מהילדים זכותם להתחנך על ברכי התורה והיהדות.
ברם, גם במדינתנו זו שאלת הצלת הנוער דורשת עבודה גדולה ורחבה, ואחד מסניפי' הוא מלחמה נגד שויון נפש הקהל, אשר כבר נתרגל להמצב אשר רק איזה אחוזים מילדי וילדות בני ישראל מקבלים חנוך כשר, ולכל היותר מתאנחים על מצב זה האיום, ומסתפקים באנחה. ואף שעבודות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ במקצוע זה הוכתרה גם היא בהצלחה מרובה, עוד רב הדרך להגיע לתכלית הרצוי' וכחות ומאמצים מרובים דרושים להעמיד את החינוך באה"ב על בסיס נכון.
הנני רוצה לקוות כי הועידה הארצית תעמיד את שתי השאלות הנ"ל - שאלת חינוך הילדים העולים לארצנו הקדושה ושאלת החינוך של הנוער באה"ב אשר לע"ע רחוקים עדין מיהדות מסורתית - על מקומם הראוי בסדר היום שלה, ונשמע קולה ותורגש השפעתה במעשים בפועל, אשר המעשה דוקא הוא העיקר.
בכבוד וברכה לכל המשתתפים, אשר יצליחו בכינוסם זה לפעול בחיזוק יסודי הדת ובהפצת תורה ביראת שמים

To the members of the presidium of the 28th National Conference of Agudas Yisrael in America
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter dated the 20th of Sivan, may the Almighty grant success: Every question in the life of the Jewish people, whether minor or major, demands serious attention from any conference convened to discuss matters of Torah and Judaism.
However, there are times when certain questions arise that involve pikuach nefesh (saving lives), whether physically or spiritually—whether for individuals or even for many—and therefore require special attention and a concentrated effort with extra urgency for rescue work. Such a question now is the issue of educating children immigrating to our holy land and saving them from heresy and spiritual destruction, G‑d forbid.
My revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal (of blessed memory), leader of Israel above all parties, whose entire work with self-sacrifice over decades was beyond party lines—in every case of danger to the Jewish people, he strove to utilize every possible group to help save the situation. At that time he began mobilizing all efforts to save these children. And although fruits have already been seen from this work, the situation of these children remains quite dangerous, and their education and guidance is still a most serious matter.
Therefore, every gathering of Jews concerned for the welfare of Klal Yisrael must be a platform where a strong voice is raised—a powerful demand for a solution to this painful issue as soon as possible—and resolutions are adopted to use every possible means to remove all obstacles and stumbling blocks from any side that prevent or deny these children their right to be educated according to Torah and Judaism.
However, even in our own country this question—saving our youth—requires great and broad work. One aspect is fighting against communal apathy; people have become accustomed to a situation where only a small percentage of Jewish boys and girls receive proper education. At best they sigh over this terrible state but settle for just sighing. And although my revered father-in-law's work in this area has also met with much success, there is still a long way to reach the desired goal; much effort is needed to establish education in America on a proper foundation.
I hope that this national conference will place both issues—the education of immigrant children in our holy land and the education of youth in America who are still far from traditional Judaism—in their proper place on its agenda. May its voice be heard and its influence felt through practical deeds—for action is what truly matters.
With honor and blessings to all participants: may you succeed at this gathering in strengthening religious foundations and spreading Torah with awe of Heaven.
