... ידוע מש"כ באגרת הקודש (סימן כז) לנחם בכפליים לתושי' את ה"נדכאים הנאנחים והנאנקים"*, אשר הצדיק "שבק חיי... לכל חי היא נפש כל חי הקשורה בנפשו... בכל אחד ואחד כפי בחינת התקשרותו באמת ואהבתו אהבת אמת הטהורה".
וביאר בספר ענין ההשתטחות ד"אף אותם שלא ידעו בו ולא הכירו בו בעודו בחיים חיותו רק שלמדו בספרים הקדושים שהניח ברכה אחריו ונהנים מאור זיו תורתו ומתחזקים על ידי זה בעבודת הוי'... בודאי גם המה נקראו תלמידיו... כי המה מאמינים בהצדיק ההוא ומקבלים ממנו אור תורתו... הענפים נמשכים לשרשן".
ופירש כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקלל[ה]"ה נבג"מ זי"ע הכ"מ במכתב, אשר "גודל התשוקה להתקשרות יכול להשביע רק כאשר ילמוד מאמרי החסידות שאומר הרב וכותב, כי בראית פנים בלבד לא סגי".
ובמכתב שני יפרט "השואל במה היא ההתקשרות שלו אלי מאחר שאין אני מכירו פנים... ההתקשרות האמיתית היא ע"י לימוד התורה, כשהוא לומד המאמרי חסידות שלי, קורא את השיחות ומתחבר עם ידידי אנ"ש ותלמידי התמימים יחיו בלימודם ובהתוועדותם, ומקיים בקשתי באמירת תהלים** ובשמירת זמני הלימודים, הנה בזה היא ההתקשרות".
וכאשר נלמוד תורתו ושיחותיו ונלך בדרך זו הישרה אשר הורנו, הנה "כמים הפנים וכו' ורוח אייתי רוח ואמשיך רוח ורוחו עומדת בקרבנו ממש... שגם בזה העולם המעשה היום לעשותם אשתכח יתיר". ומה עד כאן עומד ומשמש, אף להלן עומד ומשמש...

Shalom u'Vrachah!
It is known what is written in Igeres HaKodesh (section 27) to doubly comfort and strengthen the "brokenhearted who sigh and groan," that the tzaddik "leaves life... for all living; it is the soul of every living being bound up with his soul... each one according to the level of their true connection and pure love."
It is explained in the book about the concept of hishtat'chus that "even those who did not know or recognize him during his lifetime but studied from the holy books he left as a blessing after him and benefit from the light of his Torah and are strengthened in their service of Hashem through this... surely they too are called his students... for they believe in that tzaddik and receive from him the light of his Torah... branches are drawn to their root."
My father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, explained in a letter that "the great longing for connection can only be satisfied when one studies the chassidic discourses spoken or written by the Rebbe, for seeing one's face alone does not suffice." In another letter he details: "One who asks how he can be connected to me since I do not know him personally... true connection is through Torah study—when he learns my chassidic discourses, reads my talks, connects with my friends among Anash and Tmimim in their study and gatherings, fulfills my request to say Tehillim** and keeps set times for learning—this is true connection."
When we learn his Torah and talks and walk in this upright path he taught us, then "as water reflects a face... spirit brings spirit and draws spirit, and his spirit truly remains within us... even in this world of action today it is found even more." Just as until now he stood and served, so too afterwards he stands and serves...
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that genuine attachment to a tzaddik comes through studying his teachings, joining with fellow chassidim in learning and gatherings, and fulfilling his requests. This spiritual bond endures beyond physical presence.
