במענה על מכתבו
א) מה שכתבתי במכתבי הקודם אשר ישנם כמה ספרי מפתח למרז"ל אשר בש"ס וכו' משא"כ בפתגמי ספרות ימי הבינים, לא נתכוונתי בזה אלא לומר, שבה בשעה אשר מפתח למרז"ל שבש"ס אינו אלא מוסיף ומשלים מה שנמצא כבר, הנה מפתח לספרות ימי הבינים יהי' דבר חדש לגמרי, וימלא חסרון ניכר שאף לא התחילו להתעסק בו, כמדומני.
ב) כנראה הבין במכתבי שאני בתמי' על אשר מביא במפתחו גם מרז"ל שציינו בעלי מפתחות הקודמים לו - ולדידי, אדרבה, ספר שמושי כמו מפתח, צ"ל דבר שלם, היינו שלא יזקיק לחפש בספרים נוספים ושלא ימצאו בו אלא עניניו הוא. והיוצא מזה בנוגע להיכלו בכלל, אחרי בקשת סליחה על בקרת שלי, הוא:
- (א) שהי' צ"ל כולל כל מרז"ל שבש"ס וכו' גם אלו שכבר נרשמו מקודם.
- (ב) קונטרס ההגנה המחזיק כששית מכל הספר אין מקומו בהיכל שמושי זה.
- (ג) בסוף מכתבי הקודם נשמטה הערה ע"ד מרז"ל מכה אשר לא כתובה בתורה זו מיתת צדיקים שמחפשים מקורו -
אשר בנצוצי זוהר להרב מרגליות בסוף זח"ב מביא משו"ת עטרת צבי חיו"ד סל"ח שעד"ז נמצא - בלשון ארמי - בזח"ב י, ב.

In response to your letter: a) Regarding what I wrote in my previous letter that there are several key books for the sayings of our sages in the Talmud, etc., whereas this is not the case for the sayings from medieval literature—I only meant to say that while an index for Talmudic sages merely adds and completes what already exists, an index for medieval literature would be something entirely new and would fill a noticeable gap that, as far as I know, has not even begun to be addressed.
b) It seems you understood from my letter that I was surprised you included in your index sages already cited by previous key books. On the contrary, in my view, a practical book like an index should be complete; meaning it should not require searching in additional books and should contain only its own relevant material. Therefore, regarding your work overall—after apologizing for my criticism—the following points emerge: (a) It should include all Talmudic sages, even those previously listed elsewhere; (b) The defense pamphlet, which constitutes about one-sixth of the entire book, does not belong in this practical work; (c) At the end of my previous letter I omitted a note about the saying "A blow not written in the Torah—this refers to the death of tzaddikim," whose source is sought. In Nitzotzei Zohar by Rabbi Margaliot at the end of Zohar II he brings from Shu"t Ataret Tzvi Yoreh Deah section 138 that similarly—in Aramaic—this is found in Zohar II 10b.
