Shalom u'Vrachah!

Honored and esteemed friend, wise and understanding, vavac"h iy"a etc. Moreinu... may he live. Shalom u'Vrachah!

Our conversation at the time you received the farewell blessing strengthens my hope that upon your return to your city of residence—with renewed strength drawn from the spiritual life of Tishrei in general and especially from our joyous time, during which you benefited from the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita—you have already approached your holy work, beginning in good health the new study period.

Although I am well aware how busy you are with the educational institution under your leadership, nevertheless I am confident, based on what we discussed while you were here, that you will devote some of your time and attention to our communal work—especially regarding introducing the essence of "our book" among circles connected to and influential in education, spreading the "shmuessen," articles or reviews in newspapers and similar venues. Surely you do not need instruction on methods of publicity and dissemination, and we hope to hear good news from you about this.

Since we cannot delay printing the "Luach" any longer, we are sending it to print even before securing a donor. If you can do anything further in this matter, it will be a great merit for you due to the beloved influence this calendar has on youth's spirit—as last year's experience showed us.

The verses from our Sages and topics I included in this year's Luach are different from those in last year's (except for laws and customs of Yom Tov etc., which naturally appear again). Its external format is like last year's.

Our Sages say in this series (Bereishis Rabbah sec. 83): "Zrok chutra l'avira a'ikara kai" (Throw a stick into the air—it lands on its root). The commentary (as explained by Maharzu in Midrash Rabbah ch. 20 sec. 23; other explanations require further study) says it falls and rests on the thick side near its root. We learn two things: (a) Even though it is a dry stick long separated from its root, it is still possible to awaken its source; (b) The stick needs assistance—it must be disturbed from its rest, lifted off the ground, and thrown into the air. Each person should help as much as they can—especially those whom G‑d has blessed with pedagogical talent—to engage and strive in providing such assistance.
