קבלתי מכתבו מו' טבת וכן הקודם לו, אשר בו מודיע, כי נסתדר בעיר [מילאן], וכבר הצליח בעסקנות הצבורית בענין שיעור לימוד ברבים, וכן עשה ג"כ התחלה - אף כי, לע"ע, מצער היא - בנוגע לענין המקוה. ונצטערתי במאד על מה שמתעכב הדבר, וכידוע שענין טהרת המשפחה, הרי אין זה ענין ומצוה פרטית, כ"א נוגע למהות וחיי הילדים הנולדים, וכן ג"כ משפיע על מהות וציור הכללי של הבעל ואשתו, וכמבואר בכמה ספרים בנגלה וגם בנסתר. וידוע ג"כ מה שפסקו אפילו האחרונים* וגם מבין העולמ'שע אשר מותר למכור בית הכנסת בשביל לסדר ענין של מקוה. ועיין ג"כ בתוי"ט סוף מס' יומא על המשנה: אשריכם ישראל לפני מי אתם מיטהרים כו' מקוה ישראל ה', מה מקוה מטהר את הטמאים אף הקב"ה מטהר את ישראל. והביאורים בזה אך למותר, ולא באתי אלא לזרז על הענין, כציווי רז"ל בספרא ר"פ צו, וגם שיהי' לו אמתלא ומבוא בכדי לזרז עוה"פ את הבע"ב שלו המתעסקים לעשות את כל הצריך בענין זה בהקדם.
ב) כן בטח מתעסק במרץ הראוי בענין החינוך, אשר כפי ידיעותי זה מזמן, הנה יש בזה כר נרחב בעירו, והתנגדות קטנה ביותר לפי ערך. ואם חזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם, הרי עאכו"כ לפעולות ממשיות ובמרץ גדול. ובל"ס אשר הוו"ח אי"א הרה"ח מוה"ר[2] יעקב שי' שו"ב יסייע בידו עד כמה שאפשר...
ד) ת"ח בעד המברק מהתועדותם בחג י"ט כסלו העבר, ומוסג"פ העתק מכ' כללי בקשר עם חג החגים הוא יום י"ט כסלו, ומטובו להודיע תוכנו להמתועדים.

I received your letter from the 6th of Teves as well as the previous one, in which you inform me that you have settled in the city of Milan and have already succeeded in communal activities regarding public Torah study classes. You have also begun—though for now it is only a small start—with the matter of the mikveh.
I was very distressed that this matter is delayed. As is known, family purity is not just a private matter or mitzvah; it affects the essence and life of the children born and also influences the general character of both husband and wife, as explained in many books both in Nigleh (revealed Torah) and Nistar (hidden teachings).
It is also known that even later halachic authorities—and even among those considered more worldly—ruled that it is permissible to sell a synagogue to establish a mikveh. See also Tosefos Yom Tov at the end of tractate Yoma on the Mishnah: "Ashreichem Yisrael lifnei mi atem mitaharin... mikveh Yisrael Hashem; just as a mikveh purifies the impure, so too does Hashem purify Israel." The explanations on this are superfluous; I write only to urge action on this matter, as our Sages command in Sifra at the beginning of Parshas Tzav. This will also give you an excuse and opening to further encourage your local householders who are involved to do everything necessary for this matter without delay.
(b) Surely you are also energetically involved in education. According to my information for some time now, there is much opportunity for this in your city with very little opposition by comparison. If there is a rule that publicity never returns empty-handed, how much more so with real actions done with great energy. And certainly Harav Hachassid Yaakov Ginzburg will assist you as much as possible...
(d) Thank you for the telegram about your farbrengen on Yud Tes Kislev; enclosed is a copy of a general letter regarding "the festival of festivals," Yud Tes Kislev. Please inform those who participated about its content.
