Commandment 222: The prohibition in which we were warned not to harvest what the land produces on its own during the seventh year in the same manner as we harvest every other year. The explanation of this is that we were warned against working the land and working the trees during the Shemitah year, as we mentioned above. What the land produces from what was sown in it during the sixth year, which is called safiach, is permitted to be eaten in the seventh year, but it is not permitted to harvest it except in a manner different from the usual way. This is as He, may He be exalted, said: "The aftergrowth of your harvest you shall not reap" (there, 5). His intention is not that it should not be harvested at all, since it is already stated: "And the Sabbath produce of the land shall be yours to eat" (there, 6). Rather, His intention is: do not harvest it in the manner that you harvest the produce of other years, but only as one who harvests something that is ownerless, without preparation and without arrangement, as we will explain.
