We are now up to HaMitzvah Peidalid—the 84th mitzvah—in the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Rambam.
This mitzvah is a warning—a prohibition—that we have been warned not to anoint ourselves with the שמן המשחה—the anointing oil—that Moshe Rabbeinu made. The only ones who are permitted to use this oil are the high priest and kings. For anyone else, it is strictly forbidden to use the anointing oil.
This prohibition is based on the verse in Shemos, chapter 30, verse 32: על בשר אדם לא ייסך—it shall not be smeared on the flesh of a person. The Torah is very clear that this oil is not to be used on ordinary people.
It is clear from the Torah that someone who intentionally anoints himself with this oil is liable for kares—spiritual excision. The verse says: ואשר יתן ממנו על זר ונכרת—if someone places from it on a stranger, meaning someone who is not a Kohen Gadol or a king, he shall be cut off. This is a very severe punishment, showing how serious this prohibition is.
If someone did this by accident, he would be obligated to bring a chatas kevua—a fixed sin offering. So whether it was done intentionally or unintentionally, there are serious consequences.
The details of this mitzvah, all the halachos and how it applies, have also been explained at the beginning of Krisus—the tractate that deals with these kinds of prohibitions and their punishments.
