Mitzvah 184 - To Remove Hazards and Obstacles from All Our Dwellings

The 184th Mitzvah

1. The commandment by which we were commanded to remove hazards and obstacles from all our dwellings.

2. That is, we must build a surrounding wall around roofs, pits, ditches and the like, so that no one falls into them or from them.

3. Likewise, all dangerous places are to be built up and repaired, so that the danger is removed.

4. This is His statement: "ועשית מעקה לגגך" ("You shall make a parapet for your roof," Devarim 22:8).

5. In the words of the Sifri: "ועשית מעקה לגגך - מצוות עשה" ("'You shall make a parapet for your roof'—is a positive commandment," Sifri).

6. The laws of this mitzvah have already been explained in tractate [Bava] Kamma.
