The 22nd Mitzvah
1. The commandment in which we were commanded to guard the Beis HaMikdash, and to circle around it at all times during the night, throughout the entire night, in order to honor it, elevate it, and make it great.
2. And this is what He, may He be exalted, said to Aharon: "And you and your sons with you shall be before the Tent of Testimony" (Bamidbar 18:2).
3. That is to say: you shall be before it at all times.
4. And this command was repeated in different wording.
5. And that is His statement: "And they shall keep the charge of the Tent of Meeting" (Bamidbar 18:4).
6. And the language of the Sifri: "'You and your sons with you before the Tent of Testimony' — the Kohanim inside and the Leviim outside."
7. That is to say: for guarding and walking around it.
8. And in the Mechilta they said in this language:
9. "'And they shall keep the charge of the Tent of Meeting' — I have only [the obligation] as a positive commandment; from where [do we know] it is also a prohibition? The verse teaches: 'And you shall keep the charge of the holy' (Bamidbar 18:5)."
10. Behold, it is clear to you that its guarding is a positive commandment.
11. And there they said: "It is a great honor for the Beis HaMikdash that it has guards. A palace that has guards is not the same as a palace that does not have guards."
12. And it is known that 'palace' is a term for a royal residence.
13. That is to say: from the greatness and exaltedness of the palace is that it has permanent guards upon it.
14. And all the laws of this mitzvah have already been explained in the first chapter of Tractate Tamid and in Tractate Middos.
