Vayomer Hashem el Avram lech lecha me'artzecha umimoladtecha umibeis avicha el ha'aretz asher ar'eka ("And G‑d said to Avram: Go forth from your land, from your birthplace and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you"), and it is known1 that there are two interpretations of this.
According to the first interpretation, the going (of "lech lecha") is from above to below.
As explained in Torah Ohr,2 Avram is av ram ("exalted father") — the intellect that is hidden from all thought (sechel hane'lam mikol ra'ayon) [which is higher even than the level of Chochmah (wisdom). For Chochmah (although it is the first of all the inner faculties) is a level of revelation, whereas av ram is the intellect that is hidden from all thought. The particular levels within this are explained in the Tzemach Tzedek's glosses and explanations on Torah Ohr there3].
G‑d said to Avram, "Go forth from your land…," meaning that his hidden light should go out into revelation and be drawn down from above to below, as far as "the land" — the level of Malchus (Sovereignty).
The verse adds, "that I will show you," and this too has two interpretations.
One (in its plain sense) is that "I will show you" refers to the land, the level of Malchus; since Malchus is the level of alma de'isgalya ("the revealed world"), it says of it, "that I will show you."4
The second interpretation is that "I will show you" refers to Avram (the level of the intellect hidden from all thought): "I will show and reveal you in your very self"5 ("in your being and essence"6).
That is to say: although the sefirah of Malchus, the revealed world (especially as it is drawn down into Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah7), is the very lowest extreme, and the intellect hidden from all thought (which is hidden even from the supernal thought) is the very highest extreme — nevertheless, through the descent and drawing down (of Avram, the intellect hidden from all thought) "to the land that I will show you" (according to the first interpretation), to the level of Malchus, the revealed world (the lowest extreme), the true nature (the being and essence) of Avram will be seen and revealed (according to the second interpretation): an elevation is brought about (even) in the level of the intellect hidden from all thought (the very highest extreme), as is understood from what is explained in Torah Ohr there.8
2) The same is true of the soul's descent into the body:9 the elevation brought about in the soul through its descent below [through which it becomes a mehalech, "one who goes,"10 the meaning of "Lech lecha" ("Go forth")11] reaches even its loftiest levels, even the level of yechidah (the soul's innermost essence).
For although it is called yechidah because it "receives from the Yachid (the One Alone)"12 [which is why13 there cannot be a corresponding level in the realm of unholiness — bavu'a debavu'a leis lehu ("they do not have even a reflection of a reflection")14], nevertheless, through the soul's descending below, "from a high roof to a deep pit,"15 an elevation is brought about even in its level of yechidah.
As explained in several discourses,16 it is specifically through the soul's avodah (Divine service) in its descent below that an elevation (an elevation beyond all comparison) is brought about even in the root and essence of the soul Above.
This is also understood from what is explained in several sichos17 (on the subject of being called up to the Torah — an aliyah, literally "ascent"), that the elevation takes place in all five levels of the soul — nefesh, ruach, neshamah, chayah, yechidah — which are the three levels of Noach's ark, "lower, second and third stories."18
And according to what was explained earlier19 (based on the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov20 on the verse21 "Come… into the ark"), that Noach's ark is "an instruction in the order of avodah"22 for every Jew [especially after the month of Tishrei, when the order of avodah of "And Yaakov went on his way"23 begins.
For although he goes on his way (also) in permitted matters and weekday affairs, down to the level of "many waters," which are all the worries of earning a living, etc.,24 nevertheless, by bringing himself into the teivos (the "arks," which are also "words") of prayer and Torah, not only is he "saved from the torrent of the Flood"22 — moreover, through the waters "the ark was lifted up,"25 until "the ark came to rest"26] — it is understood from this that the elevation of the soul brought about through its descent below and its being clothed in "many waters" takes place in all three levels (of Noach's ark), lower, second and third, which in the human soul are nefesh, ruach and neshamah, chayah and yechidah.27
This is like what was explained above (section 1): through Avram's going and descending "to the land," the level of Malchus — the purpose (of this descent) being that there should be revelation in Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah28 [as is known,29 Avram went to the land in order to draw down into Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah, down to this physical world, and thereby prepared for the drawing down brought about by performing the mitzvos with physical things after the Giving of the Torah] — an elevation is brought about even in the level of the intellect hidden from all thought.
3) The second interpretation of "Lech lecha… to the land" is (in keeping with the plain meaning of the verse30) that this going is from below to above: the going "from your land, from your birthplace and from your father's house" — which (in the plain meaning of the verse) is the land, etc., of Terach [the opposite of purity31], the very lowest level — and from there he is to go and rise from below to above, "to the land that I will show you," which refers (as above, section 1) to the level of Malchus; and further, to the level of "He built there an altar to Havayah Who had appeared to him"32 (which is higher than the level of Malchus); and further still, to "He built there an altar to Havayah"33 unqualified — the level of the supernal Havayah, the hidden Havayah, which is higher than the (lower) Havayah that is seen.34
So too with the avodah of "And Yaakov went on his way" in every Jew after the month of Tishrei: this going is (not only from above to below — going on his way from the festivals of Tishrei to his way in permitted matters and weekday affairs throughout the year — but) also from below to above. It begins with his faculty of action, and within the faculty of action itself, as it is in his heel, the lowest level of the human body [to the point that it is "the opposite of life,"35 like what was cited above regarding Terach, who is the opposite of purity]; and from there his going from below to above begins, bringing about that even his heel er zol derheren Elokus ("should sense G‑dliness") [as it is written of Avraham, eikev asher shama Avraham bekoli ("because Avraham hearkened to My voice"36 — eikev also meaning "heel"), that even his heel hot derhert ("sensed it").37
And because this was so with Avraham our father, the power for it was given to every Jew (like the hidden love in every Jew, which is our inheritance from our forefathers,38 and particularly from Avraham our father39)]; and from this is drawn (in the manner of going from below to above) the "hearing" (der derher, the sensing) of G‑dliness in all the faculties, up to the faculty of intellect in the head, so that they have this "hearing" beyond the measure and limitation of intellect.
This aspect of "And Yaakov went on his way" (going from below to above) also begins after the month of Tishrei.
For the avodah of Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah (the conclusion of the festivals of Tishrei) is with (joy and) dancing, and dancing is (mainly, and begins) with the feet — and within the feet themselves, with the heel.
And when the heels lift themselves up (hoyben zich, "rise up") and dance, they lift up the head as well (and the faculty of intellect within it),40 so that it too dances with great joy, beyond measure and limitation.
From this, power is drawn for the avodah of "And Yaakov went on his way" (going from below to above) throughout the year, beginning with the faculty of action as it is in the heel [including the matters "that a person tramples with his heels,"41 i.e., matters in which (for whatever reason) he has no vitality (like the heel in the plain sense, which is "the opposite of life")], and from there he draws it (in the manner of going from below to above) also into the faculty of intellect in the head, as above.
4) These two interpretations of "Lech lecha me'artzecha…" correspond to the two interpretations of "Your forefathers dwelt beyond the river."42
According to the interpretation [in the inner dimension of the Torah43] that "beyond the river" is the level that is higher (even) than the level of "A river went out of Eden"44 (Binah, understanding, of Atzilus), and the meaning of "Your forefathers dwelt beyond the river…" is that the root of the Patriarchs is "beyond the river," higher than Atzilus, and from there they were drawn down (to the other side of the river, i.e.) into Z"A (Zeir Anpin, the emotive attributes) of Atzilus, and ultimately to "I led him through all the land of Canaan"45 — the descent and drawing down into the level of Malchus (as above, section 1, that the Land of Israel refers to Malchus) — the going "from your land…," which refers to "beyond the river," "to the land that I will show you," is a going from above to below.46
According to the interpretation (in the plain sense) that "beyond the river" is Terach's place, and "Your forefathers dwelt beyond the river…" is said in disparagement [as is evident from the saying of our Sages,47 "He begins with disgrace… 'In the beginning our forefathers were idol-worshippers…, as it is said: Your forefathers dwelt beyond the river…'"] — the going "from your land…" ("beyond the river") "to the land that I will show you" is a going and ascent from below to above48 (as above, section 3).
5) Now, although the two above interpretations of "Lech lecha" are two different and opposite interpretations, nevertheless, since both interpretations are of the same word (the word lech), it is evident from this49 that "Lech lecha" [and the instruction for every Jew in this parsha] includes both modes together: going from above to below and going from below to above.
This is like "Vehis'halachti besochechem" ("I will walk among you"),50 where "vehis'halachti" (a plural expression) includes51 both of the above kinds of going.52
So too with "Va'olech eschem komemiyus" ("I will lead you upright"):53 "komemiyus" (a plural form54) indicates two statures55 [the stature of or yashar ("direct light") and the stature of or chozer ("returning light"), which parallel the two kinds of going mentioned above56], and the intent is that "komemiyus" includes both statures together.
This can be connected with this year (in particular), which is a leap year — and moreover, the leap year that concludes a machzor katan (the nineteen-year "minor cycle"), in which the solar year and the lunar year are brought into alignment (with utmost completeness).57
For the sun is the level of the giver — paralleling the going from above to below — and the moon (which "has nothing of its own"58) is the level of the recipient — paralleling the going from below to above.
And a leap year (especially the leap year that concludes a minor cycle) is the joining and combining of the two forms of avodah [the avodah of the sun (the level of the giver, going from above to below, which in general is59 the avodah of tzaddikim) and the avodah of the moon (the level of the recipient, going from below to above, which in general is59 the avodah of baalei teshuvah, those who return to G‑d)], so that they become one (a "complete year"), as was explained above at length.60
As it says,61 "And our eyes shall shine like the sun and like the moon," the intent being [not only that both qualities should be present, the quality of the sun and the quality of the moon, but also] that the two matters (and qualities) should be as one.
And this [the joining and uniting of the two matters above] is a preparation and a vessel [in the manner of a limb, which not only receives but also draws down62] for the drawing down of the Ohr Ein Sof (the Infinite Light), which is beyond the bounds of "above" and "below."
[This is like what is known,63 that after the completion of the isarusa dilesata ("arousal from below," the level of the moon) and the revelation of the isarusa dile'eila ("arousal from Above," the level of the sun) (which is drawn down through the arousal from below), there is afterwards drawn down an arousal from Above from a place that the arousal from below does not reach at all.]
For the completeness of the avodah [in the combining of the two matters above, a complete year] is the "complete place," which is a vessel for the dwelling of the Ohr Ein Sof, as "the Holy One, blessed be He, dwells in a complete place."64
Ultimately, through this the drawing down of the Essence (Atzmus) comes about, which is the truth and ultimate of completeness.
And Israel and the Holy One, blessed be He, become (through the Torah) kula chad ("entirely one"),65 in such a way that any division between them is impossible, since the Torah of truth testifies that they are one.
