Mayim rabim lo yuchlu lechabos es ha'ahavah uneharos lo yishtefuha gu' ("Many waters cannot extinguish the love, nor can rivers drown it…").1 It is explained in the discourses of our Rebbeim2 that the "many waters" are all the worries of earning a living and the thoughts about the affairs of this world; nevertheless, they cannot extinguish the ahavah mesuteres (the hidden love for G‑d) that is in every Jewish soul. "Nor can rivers drown it": even when these thoughts are extremely troubling, to the point that they race on constantly without any pause at all, like rivers3 that flow continually without a break and sweep along in a powerful torrent,4 they still cannot drown the love (and cannot extinguish it5).
2) The explanation of the precise wording "the worries of earning a living": It is written,6 Yegia kapecha ki socheil gu' ("When you eat the labor of your hands…"), and the precision in this is well known:7 specifically "the labor of your hands," but not the labor of the mind and heart.
That is to say: it is true that (since the shefa — the flow of Divine blessing — in this world is drawn down through the garment of nature8) there must be some activity in which the blessing from Above can be clothed, as it is written,9 "And the L‑rd your G‑d will bless you in all that you do" (specifically "that you do"); and at times (because of the great concealment and hiddenness10) toil is needed as well. Nevertheless, one need occupy in this activity only his external faculties — "the labor of your hands" [the hands and the other external limbs11] — but not his inner and loftier faculties (those of the mind and heart), because these faculties must be dedicated to serving his Maker, which is the purpose for which he was created.12
And although, since the blessing is hidden and concealed in the garments of nature, he must also use his intellect for the needs of his business, this is only as much as the activity requires, and not in the manner of toil with clever schemes and stratagems.
All the more so, since "the blessing of G‑d — it makes rich,"13 and business is no more than a garment for G‑d's blessing (and not, G‑d forbid, that the business is the source of his livelihood), it is understood14 that, as with actual garments, "one who adds more garments has gained nothing — on the contrary,15 he spoils things more."16
This is the precision of the phrase "the worries of earning a living": although he is in a low state, in which he has worries about his livelihood [which shows that he does not reflect properly, in his own soul, that "the blessing of G‑d — it makes rich"17], nevertheless even the worries cannot, G‑d forbid, extinguish the hidden love that is in every Jew.
3) Now, the novelty in the statement that many waters cannot extinguish the love is this: it is known that the root of the "many waters" [the worries of earning a living] is in the level of Tohu (the world of "Chaos"), which preceded Tikkun (the world of "Rectification").18
This is why they are called "many waters" — because they are "many" (also) by virtue of their root and source.19
And this is the remarkable point20 in the statement that many waters cannot extinguish the love and rivers cannot drown it: although the root of the many waters and the rivers21 is in the level of Tohu, which preceded Tikkun (the root of the G‑dly soul), they nevertheless cannot, G‑d forbid, extinguish the love in the G‑dly soul.22
The reason for this is (as is written just before it23) reshafeha rishpei esh shalheves Kah ("its flashes are flashes of fire, a flame of G‑d"):24 the root of the soul and of the hidden love within it is in the Essence of the Ein Sof (G‑d's infinite Being), which is higher even than the level of Tohu.
For the root of the love in the G‑dly soul is in the level of "a flame of G‑d" as it is bound up and hidden within the coal ("flashes of fire"25), and higher still26 — as it is in the level of Tzur ("Rock")27 (which is above the name Havayah28), where the root of the soul is, as explained in Likkutei Torah29 on the verse,30 "And the spirit will return to G‑d (ha'Elokim) Who gave it": the level of "G‑d (Who gave it)" is the level of Tzur mentioned above.
4) Moreover, not only are these many waters unable, G‑d forbid, to extinguish the love of the soul; more than that, through them an advantage is brought about in the love.
That is: through the soul's descent below into this world and its being clothed in these many waters, it reaches a level loftier than its level before its descent below.31
[This is the ultimate purpose of these many waters. Therefore, in the end, they are unable to extinguish the love, because32 the ultimate, deepest intent of the many waters themselves is, on the contrary, to bring about an advantage in the love.33]
In terms of avodah (Divine service), the elevation the soul attains through its descent below and its being clothed in these many waters is that it comes to teshuvah (return to G‑d).34
As is known,35 before their descent into the body the souls are at the level of tzaddikim gemurim (the completely righteous), and the advantage brought about in them through their descent into the body is that they become baalei teshuvah (returnees to G‑d), of whom it is said, "In the place where baalei teshuvah stand, the completely righteous do not stand";36 and more than that, they cannot stand there37 — it is not (even) within their capacity.38
This is the reason the soul descended below: teshuvah [although it is not specifically for sins, but is rather the return of the soul to its source and root39] applies specifically when one is not in his true place (his source and root), for then it is possible for him to return to his root and source — the level of "And the spirit will return to G‑d Who gave it."40
And since the virtue of the baal teshuvah is loftier than the virtue of the tzaddikim [to the point that the difference between them is beyond comparison, which is why in the place where baalei teshuvah stand the completely righteous cannot stand, as above], therefore, through the teshuvah newly brought about in the soul by its descent below, it is elevated higher even than it was in its root, in the level of "G‑d Who gave it."41
5) Now, the root of the souls is in G‑d's Essence, which is above all revelations — as is evident (also) from the saying of our Sages,42 "With whom did He consult? With the souls of the righteous": consultation applies even to the loftiest revelations (since they come about by choice and not, G‑d forbid, by necessity), so it is understood that the souls with whom He consulted are above all revelations.43 Even so, it can be said that through teshuvah (in their descent below) they undergo an ascent even in relation to the level they had in their root.
This will be understood in light of what the Maggid (of Mezritch) wrote44 explaining the saying of our Sages,45 "Israel arose in [G‑d's] thought": it is like a man who has a son — even when the son has passed from before him and gone away from him, the son's image is nevertheless engraved in the father's thought.
But among human beings this applies only to someone who already has a son, etc.
With G‑d, however, it can be said that even before Israel was created their image was engraved in His thought, as our Sages said,45 "Israel arose in [G‑d's] thought" — for with Him, past and future are one.
It is understood from this that the souls' being rooted in G‑d's Essence and His consulting with them, etc., refers to the souls as they are as created beings (and as they descend below); it is only that (also) this image is engraved in His thought, because with Him past and future are one.
As is known46 in explaining "With whom did He consult, etc.": this is the delight that arose before Him — that He would, as it were, take delight in the avodah of the souls below.
Accordingly, we can understand the ascent the souls attain through their descent below, even though they are rooted in G‑d's Essence even before their descent: their being rooted in His Essence (and His consulting with them, etc.) comes from His knowing that afterwards they will descend below, etc., and fulfill the Divine intent.47
And although even at the outset it is known with complete certainty that they will fulfill the intent, that is only in potential, whereas the ultimate elevation (and intent) is48 the actual deed.
[This is also the precision of the wording "With whom did He consult? With the souls of the righteous": while they are at the stage of consultation [when their elevation is in potential, in that it is known they will fulfill the intent] they are at the level of tzaddikim, and after their descent below [when they fulfill the intent in actual deed] they become baalei teshuvah.]
6) This can be connected with "And Yaakov went on his way" (which applies on Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Noach49): although after the month of Tishrei one goes on his way (also) in permitted, mundane matters and weekday affairs, down to the level of the "many waters" mentioned above, through this very thing he rises higher, becoming a mehalech ("one who goes" — who advances from level to level)50 — as the verse puts it,51 "And Yaakov went on his way."
Knowing this [that the descent (going on one's way in mundane matters, etc.) is for the sake of an ascent] makes the going be with joy and gladness of heart [similar to what is written52 regarding Yaakov, "And Yaakov lifted his feet…" — once he had been given good tidings, etc.].
This in turn makes his avodah utterly complete and beyond measure and limitation (the level of "with all your might"53), for joy breaks through54 all boundaries.
And by serving in his avodah [in all three lines (the three sons of Noach55) of Torah, avodah (prayer) and gemilus chassadim (acts of kindness)] with utter completeness, with joy and gladness of heart, G‑d's blessing is also drawn down to him in everything he needs [in the three areas of children, life (health) and sustenance56], with utter completeness, with joy and gladness of heart — both spiritually and materially, and spiritually and materially together.
