You shall dwell in sukkos for seven days; every native in Israel shall dwell in sukkos, so that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel dwell in sukkos when I brought them out of the land of Egypt.
The Rebbe, my father-in-law, explains in his maamar beginning with 'Zeh' (in the series of Rosh Hashanah 5703), that 'ki vasukkos hoshavti' ('for in sukkos I made the children of Israel dwell') means that G‑d Himself made the Jewish people dwell in sukkos.
And 'basukkos teishvu' ('you shall dwell in sukkos') is a command to the Jewish people that they should dwell in sukkos, meaning that they do so by their own power; nevertheless, he says that 'ki vasukkos hoshavti' is the reason for 'basukkos teishvu'.
Because G‑d made the Jewish people dwell in sukkos [something that is only in the embrace of the Creator], therefore they can and must dwell in sukkos by their own power.2
And it can be said that in the precise wording of the maamar there are two points.3
Since 'ki vasukkos hoshavti' is in the embrace of the Creator, how is it possible for the created being to resemble the Creator?
Also, from the fact that it gives a reason for 'basukkos teishvu' ('for in sukkos I made...'), it is evident that in order for the Jewish people to be able to dwell in sukkos, it is not by their own power but through empowerment from Above.
Nevertheless, after G‑d made the Jewish people dwell in sukkos (when He took them out of Egypt), they are able to dwell in the sukkah by their own power.
And the main point of explanation in the maamar is that in the sukkah, transcendent lights (orot makifim) are drawn down, and through dwelling in the sukkah, these are drawn into the inner dimension and become settled lights.4
And this is why 'basukkos teishvu' is through empowerment from Above, because the makifim (as they are in themselves) are the opposite of settlement, and in order for there to be 'basukkos teishvu'—that through the Jewish people dwelling in the sukkah they draw the transcendent lights inward,
and even more so, that they become settled lights—this is through 'ki vasukkos hoshavti,' that G‑d made the Jewish people dwell in sukkos, an isarusa d'le'eila (arousal from Above).5
And what is said about 'basukkos teishvu,' whose meaning (as above) is that the Jewish people draw the transcendent lights inward by their own power, is because this, that 'ki vasukkos hoshavti' happened as an isarusa d'le'eila, was from the outset in order that through it there would be 'basukkos teishvu' through their own effort.
2) And behold, even in the dwelling in sukkos by the Jewish people through their own power, there are two aspects.
'Basukkos teishvu' ('you shall dwell in sukkos'), and 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos' ('every native in Israel shall dwell in sukkos').
And among the differences between these two aspects is that 'basukkos teishvu' is in the language of command, while 'yeishvu basukkos' is in the language of narrative and declaration.
Another difference is that the command of 'basukkos teishvu' is for all of Israel, whereas those who 'shall dwell in sukkos' (on their own, without needing a command) are (only) the native in Israel.
And the maamar explains that in makifim (encompassing lights) there are two levels: the close makif and the distant makif.
And the two aspects of 'basukkos teishvu' and 'yeishvu basukkos' correspond to these two levels.
'Basukkos teishvu' is in the closer makif, and 'yeishvu basukkos' is in the more distant makif.
And this is why, regarding 'yeishvu basukkos,' it says 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael' ('every native in Israel'), for 'ezrach b'Yisrael' refers to the essence of the soul which is rooted in the Essence, and the dwelling in the more distant makif is at the level of the essence of the soul.6
And it can be said that this is why 'yeishvu basukkos' is not in the language of command but in the language of narrative and declaration, because the concept of command applies only to the level of the soul as it is invested in the body, whereas in the soul above, and especially in the essence of the soul, there is no command.
And the concept of 'yeishvu basukkos,' that the essence of the soul dwells in the more distant makif, is (not because of a command, but) from itself, since its root is in the Essence.7
And it is explained in the maamar that 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos' is a reason for 'basukkos teishvu.'
That is, the power for 'basukkos teishvu,' to draw down the closer makif, is because the essence of the soul (the native in Israel) is rooted in the Essence (the more distant makif).
But it needs to be understood: the reason (and power) for 'basukkos teishvu' is (explicitly in the verse) 'ki vasukkos hoshavti,' so why is there also a need for the reason of 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos'?
Part 2
Part 2
3) This will be understood by first explaining that since the transcendent lights (makifim) as they are in themselves do not come into a settled state, the fact that through the Jewish people dwelling in the sukkah these are drawn inward and become settled is like a change in the transcendent lights.
And even more so, from the language of the maamar, that through dwelling in the sukkah, transcendent lights are drawn inward and become settled lights (and not just that transcendent lights are drawn inward and into settlement), it implies,
that the change brought about by the Jewish people dwelling in the sukkah is also in the transcendent lights themselves.
That in addition to the fact that through dwelling in the sukkah they are drawn inward and into settlement, even the transcendent lights themselves are transformed into settled lights.
And it needs to be understood: how is it possible that through the service of man (dwelling in the sukkah) there should be a change in the supernal lights?
Now, the simple meaning of 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos' is that Jews below (souls in bodies) must dwell in a physical sukkah.
And based on the well-known principle that all interpretations of a verse are connected, it is understood that even the concept of 'yeishvu basukkos' in the more distant makif is accomplished through dwelling in the physical sukkah.8
Accordingly, through the Jewish people dwelling in the sukkah, a change is effected even in the more distant makif.
And it needs to be understood, for it is explained in many places on the verse 'ki lo adam hu lehinachem' ('for He is not a man, that He should relent'), that the concept of regret and change applies only in the aspect of 'adam' (man), but in the aspect of 'not adam,' regret and change do not apply.910
The reason for this is that change is primarily in intellect, for in intellect there are arguments for and against, and since a person is intellect and emotions—that is, even the emotions of a person are according to the intellect—therefore, when there is a change in intellect, the emotions also change.
But a will that is above intellect, meaning an essential will that has no reason, not even a hidden reason, does not change.
And similarly above, that in the Sefiros of Atzilus and even in the external aspect of Kesser (which is also included in the aspect of 'adam'), change is possible, but in the inner aspect of Kesser ('not adam'), change does not apply.
Accordingly, it needs to be understood, for it seems from the maamar that through the Jewish people dwelling in the sukkah, even the more distant makif is drawn inward; how, then, is change possible in the more distant makif?
4) And it can be explained as follows: that which defines a makif as not coming into settlement is as it is in itself, but from the perspective of the Essence of the Infinite Light (Atzmus Ein Sof), for which there is no difference between makif and pnimiyus (inner light), even the makif can come into settlement.
And through the Jewish people dwelling in the sukkah, they draw from the Essence of the Infinite Light, and thereby even the transcendent lights become settled lights.
This can be understood based on the well-known explanation of the verse 'bakeseh l'yom chageinu' ('at the appointed time for our festival'), that the matters which (on Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur)1112 are concealed (covered and hidden), are revealed on Sukkos.
From this it is understood that the service of 'basukkos teishvu' is the revelation of the teshuvah of Yom Kippur, through which there is a drawing from the Essence of the Infinite Light (as will be explained).13
And through the service of 'basukkos teishvu,' the drawing from the Essence of the Infinite Light that comes through the teshuvah of Yom Kippur is revealed.
And through this, even the transcendent lights become settled lights.
And based on the well-known principle that the service of man (isarusa d'letata) through which the drawing (isarusa d'le'eila) is effected must be similar to the drawing itself, it can be added14
that this, that through the service of 'basukkos teishvu' a change is effected above (that transcendent lights become settled lights), is because the service of 'basukkos teishvu' is also related to the concept of change.
This can be understood by first explaining that the simple reason why through teshuvah all blemishes are repaired is because through teshuvah a person is changed and becomes a new entity.15
In the words of the Rambam: 'I am another person and not the same one who did those deeds.'16
This concept is primarily in simple teshuvah (repentance in its plain sense).
For in the case of tzaddikim, even their service of teshuvah—which is about leaving their previous state and existence—is forbidden from now on; nevertheless, since tzaddikim wish to do the will of their Creator,1718
and the higher intention (the will of their Creator) in the soul's descent into the body is to come to teshuvah, therefore, in the will of the tzaddikim (even before their own teshuvah) is included (in a hidden way) also the leaving of their existence that comes through teshuvah.
But for a baal teshuvah in the plain sense, since previously (before teshuvah) he was in a state where he did not do the will of G‑d, for he committed intentional sins, when he later does teshuvah, this is not a continuation of his previous state, and through teshuvah he becomes an entirely new entity.
And on a deeper level, it can be said that the novelty in simple teshuvah is also with regard to the will and intention Above.19
For the will and intention Above in the creation of the world and man is that man should be a tzaddik, as our Sages said: 'With whom did He consult? With the souls of the tzaddikim.'20
And when a person sins and causes a blemish and deviates from the path (contrary to the intention in the creation of the world and man), and then later corrects this through teshuvah, a new light is drawn down that was not in the original intention of creation.
And the power to draw down a new light that was not in the intention of 'with whom did He consult' is because the root of souls is in the Essence of the Infinite Light, which is even higher than their root in the concept of 'with whom did He consult.'
And it can be said that this, that through teshuvah a person is changed from his previous state and becomes an entirely new entity—a true novelty that is not a continuation of his previous state—is,
because through teshuvah, the essence of the soul as it is rooted in the Essence of the Infinite Light is drawn down, and with regard to the essence of the soul, it makes no difference what the person's state was before teshuvah.21
Accordingly, we can further explain that through the service of 'basukkos teishvu' (the revelation of the teshuvah of Yom Kippur), a change is effected in the transcendent lights, which become settled lights, because the drawing down of the essence of the soul through teshuvah is revealed in the fact that the person is changed from his previous state.22
Therefore, the revelation of the drawing from the Essence that comes through 'basukkos teishvu' (the revelation of the teshuvah of Yom Kippur) is in the aspect of change, that the transcendent lights are transformed into settled lights.
Part 3
Part 3
5) And it can be said that the revelation of the essence of the soul, which is rooted in the Essence of the Infinite Light (higher than the root of souls in the concept of 'with whom did He consult'), which comes through teshuvah, is in two aspects.
In the teshuvah itself and in the reason that brings one to teshuvah.
The idea is that when a person does teshuvah after sinning, it is because of the root of the soul in the Essence of the Infinite Light, which is higher than the concept of 'with whom did He consult.'
For from the root of souls in the concept of 'with whom did He consult'—with the souls of the tzaddikim—when one sins and causes a blemish (contrary to the intention of 'with whom did He consult'), he becomes separated from his source,
and the fact that after sinning he does teshuvah and changes his existence is because of the revelation of the root of the soul in the Essence of the Infinite Light, which is higher than the concept of 'with whom did He consult.'
Another point is that the reason that brings him to return in teshuvah is because the point of Jewishness within him is always intact (and when the point of Jewishness is aroused, he does not want in any way to be separated and does teshuvah),
and this, that the point of Jewishness within him is always intact—even at the time of sin the soul is faithful to Him—is because the soul's connection to G‑dliness is an essential connection, higher than the connection through Torah and mitzvos (the concept of 'with whom did He consult').23
The difference between these two aspects is that the revelation of the essence of the soul in that even after sins he returns to G‑d is that through the sins he became separated from G‑dliness (which is why he needs to do teshuvah for them),
but since the root of the soul is in the Essence of the Infinite Light, higher than the concept of 'with whom did He consult,' the separation caused by the sins is only external, and therefore he is able to do teshuvah (by revealing the inner dimension).
The revelation of the essence of the soul in the reason that brings him to return in teshuvah is that through the sins there was never, G‑d forbid, any deficiency in the essential connection of the essence of the soul to G‑dliness,
and even at the time of sin the soul is faithful to Him. And this is similar to what was explained above (in the maamar beginning with 'V'chol Adam Lo Yihiyeh'),24
that the atonement that comes through the drawing from the Essence of the Infinite Light, the Master of Will, is in such a way that through the sins a blemish is made, and through the drawing from the Essence of the Infinite Light, the Master of Will, Who is not compelled in His will, the blemishes are atoned.
And the atonement that comes from the essence of Yom Kippur is (not in the manner of an action, but) that on this day the connection of the essence of the soul with the Essence (higher than the Master of Will) is revealed, and at this level there is no blemish to begin with.
Accordingly, we can further explain why the essence of Yom Kippur atones (specifically) for those who return, because in order for there to be a drawing of the concept of the essence of the day—the revelation of the essential connection of the essence of the soul with the Essence—2526
there must be some action by the person [similar to the revelation of the essence of the soul on Rosh Hashanah, which is through the service of 'make Me King over you'],27
and since the reason that brings one to do teshuvah is the essential connection, therefore, through teshuvah, there is a drawing of the concept of the essence of the day.
6) And a more detailed explanation of the matter can be understood by first introducing what was explained above (in the maamar beginning with 'Yivchar Lanu'), that in the sounding of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, through which 'make Me King over you' is accomplished, there are three aspects.28
The fulfillment of the mitzvah of sounding the shofar, which is the isarusa d'letata (arousal from below) that awakens the revealed will.
And the teshuvah of the sounding of the shofar, through which the resolve in the hidden will (thought and absolute will) is drawn down, and even higher, in the absolute will in its essence, that through the isarusa d'letata the revealed will is awakened.
And the inner bittul (self-nullification) that comes from the essence of the soul, through which the absolute will itself is drawn down.
And based on the well-known principle that the building of Malchus (sovereignty) takes place throughout the Ten Days of Teshuvah, it can be said that even during the Ten Days of Teshuvah, in addition to the service of teshuvah, there must also be service that comes from the essence of the soul.2930
And this is why during the Ten Days of Teshuvah we say 'Shir Hama'alos Mima'amakim' ('A Song of Ascents: Out of the depths'), and it is stated in the Zohar: 'And that deep, deep place (the plural of depths) is called teshuvah.'3132
And the Rebbe, my father-in-law, explains in the aforementioned series that these are the two depths: the hidden will and the absolute will in its essence.33
The drawing from the depth of the hidden will is through the cry of the voice that comes from the makif of chayah, and the drawing from the depth of the absolute will is through the cry of the heart that comes from the makif of yechidah.
And elsewhere it is stated in the Zohar: 'Shir Hama'alos' is stated simply, without specifying who said it, but 'Shir Hama'alos' is something that all people are destined to say.34
Part 4
Part 4
And in continuation there it says: 'And did David say this? But it is written, "With all my heart I have sought You"... What is the need for "Out of the depths"? Rather, thus it was taught: every person... from the root of all roots.'35
And it is explained in Chassidus that the precision in the Zohar—'And did David say this?'—is that since he already said 'With all my heart I have sought You,' which refers to the inner heart, why is it necessary to say 'Out of the depths'?36
And it is explained that one must draw from the root of all roots, from the innermost and essence of the Infinite Light, and in order to draw from there, it is through the service that comes from the innermost and essence of the soul, from the depths, which is higher than the service of the inner heart ('with all my heart').
And it can be said that in the Zohar's statement 'and that deep, deep place is called teshuvah,' it is speaking about the teshuvah that draws the resolve in the hidden will and in the absolute will, that through the isarusa d'letata the revealed will is awakened,
which is through the teshuvah of Rosh Hashanah and the Ten Days of Teshuvah. And since the resolve in the hidden will and in the absolute will is in relation to the revealed will, therefore,
also the service through which this resolve is drawn is at the level of the essence of the soul that is connected to the revealed powers, which in general are the makifim of chayah and yechidah.
And in the maamar 'Shir Hama'alos Stam' (where teshuvah is not mentioned), it speaks about drawing the absolute will itself (the innermost and essence of the Infinite Light, the root of all roots), and this drawing is through the service that comes from the essence of the soul (the innermost and essence of the soul).
And this is why in this maamar it specifically says 'Shir Hama'alos Stam'—that all people are destined to say it—because the service that comes from the essence of the soul is equal in everyone.
7) And it can be said that on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the service of 'mima'amakim' ('out of the depths') is loftier than the service of 'mima'amakim' during the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
For during the Ten Days of Teshuvah, whose main theme (as their name implies) is teshuvah (and the concept of 'make Me King over you' is not as revealed in these days), the service of 'mima'amakim' (as it is revealed) is mainly in the depth of the essence of the soul that is connected to the revealed powers,
whereas on Rosh Hashanah, whose main theme is 'make Me King over you' [which is primarily from the essence of the soul], the service of 'mima'amakim' is in the depth of the essence of the soul that is above connection to the revealed powers.
And similarly on Yom Kippur, since its main theme is the atonement that comes from the essence of the day—the revelation of the essential connection of the essence of the soul with the Essence—therefore, the service of Yom Kippur is also from the depth of the essence of the soul that is above connection to the revealed powers.
And it can be said that the service from the depth of the essence of the soul on Yom Kippur is in the teshuvah of Yom Kippur, which is loftier than the teshuvah of the entire year and even the teshuvah of the Ten Days of Teshuvah.37
The idea is that in teshuvah in general, the essential connection of the essence of the soul with the Essence is only the reason that brings to teshuvah,
but the teshuvah itself [which is regret for having done the opposite of His will and acceptance to fulfill His will] is from the essence of the soul that is connected to the revealed powers, which reaches the Master of Will,
whereas the teshuvah of Yom Kippur is (primarily) to be connected with the Essence, and therefore, in it is revealed the connection of the essence of the soul (which is above connection to the revealed powers) with the Essence (which is above the Master of Will).38
And it can be said that this is what the Rambam means when he writes that Yom Kippur is a time of teshuvah for all, that the intention of 'for all' is (also) equally for everyone.39
For in the teshuvah of the entire year (including also the teshuvah of the Ten Days of Teshuvah), which is from the level of the essence of the soul that is connected to the revealed powers, there are many different levels.
But the teshuvah of Yom Kippur, which is from the essence of the soul that is above connection to the revealed powers, is equal in everyone.
8) And this is 'basukkos teishvu... kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos... ki vasukkos hoshavti...'
That 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos' and 'ki vasukkos hoshavti...' are two reasons for 'basukkos teishvu' (as explained in the maamar in the Rosh Hashanah 5703 series, cited above in section 2).
The idea is that 'basukkos teishvu' is the revelation of the teshuvah of Yom Kippur, and in the teshuvah of Yom Kippur there are three aspects.
The teshuvah itself, and two aspects in the root and reason for teshuvah.
The teshuvah itself (even the teshuvah of Yom Kippur) is that a person changes himself, leaves his previous state, and becomes a new entity.
This change is in the revealed powers of the soul.
And this change in the revealed powers of a person comes through arousing and revealing the essence of the soul within him, meaning the essence of the soul that is connected to the revealed powers.
[And similarly above, that this, that a person becomes pleasing before Him as before the sin, is because through teshuvah a new will is drawn from the Infinite Light, the Master of Will].40
Another aspect in the teshuvah of Yom Kippur is that it is revealed and felt that the true root and reason for teshuvah is the essential connection of the essence of the soul (which is above connection to the revealed powers) with the Essence (which is above the Master of Will).
Therefore, also in the concept of 'basukkos teishvu' (which is the revelation of the teshuvah of Yom Kippur), there are three aspects.
The aspect of 'basukkos teishvu' itself—the change in the closer makif, which becomes a settled light.
And the reason for this is—'ki vasukkos hoshavti...' through an isarusa d'le'eila (arousal from Above).
And it can be said that this is similar to what was brought above in section 6, that this, that through isarusa d'letata the revealed will is aroused (even though the isarusa d'letata is incomparable to the will), it is not because of the revealed will itself (since the revealed will is related to the worlds and is defined by the fact that the created beings are incomparable to it and cannot arouse it), but because so it was resolved in the absolute will.
And similarly, in the concept of 'basukkos teishvu,' the change, so to speak, that occurs in the closer makif to become a settled light is,
because 'ki vasukkos hoshavti' through an isarusa d'le'eila, a drawing from the Essence of the Infinite Light, for which there is no difference between makif and pnimiyus, and even the makif can come into settlement.
[Just as through teshuvah a (new) will is drawn from the Infinite Light, the Master of Will].
Another reason for 'basukkos teishvu'—'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos,' in the more distant makif.
The concept of dwelling (settlement) in the more distant makif is not in the manner of action [for in the more distant makif, the aspect of 'not adam,' it is not possible for there to be action and change,
as explained above in section 3], but rather, 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael, yeishvu basukkos' (the more distant makif) is from themselves, because they are rooted in the Essence.
[And this is what our Sages said on the verse 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos'—it teaches that all Israel are worthy to dwell in one sukkah, for at this level all Israel are equal].41
And this is similar to the concept of the essence of Yom Kippur, that from the perspective of the essential connection of the essence of the soul with the Essence, there is no blemish to begin with.
And just as on Yom Kippur, the concept of the essence of the day shines openly even in the teshuvah of Yom Kippur, in which it is felt (as above) that it is drawn from the essential connection of the essence of the soul with the Essence, so too on Sukkos,
that 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos' is a reason for 'basukkos teishvu,' that this, that the closer makif is drawn inward and becomes a settled light,
it is felt within it that the reason for this is 'kol ha'ezrach b'Yisrael yeishvu basukkos,' in the more distant makif—the essential connection of the essence of the soul with the Essence.
