Vechag ha'asif… be'ospecha es ma'asecha min hasadeh ("And the Festival of Ingathering… when you gather in your work from the field").1 The baal hahillula (the Rebbe Maharash, whose hillula is today) explains2 that the festivals being set at the seasons of the harvest is intended (primarily) for the harvest in its spiritual sense.3
This is why the festival of Sukkos was set at the time of gathering the harvest — to the point that it is called Chag Ha'asif (the Festival of Ingathering)4 — because the theme of Sukkos is bound up with, and follows upon, the avodah (divine service) of gathering the harvest (ve'asafta5 deganecha vesiroshecha veyitzharecha — "and you shall gather in your grain, your wine and your oil"6) in its spiritual sense.
Just as the literal, physical gathering of the harvest takes place before the festival begins — for is it permitted on Yom Tov?7 — so it is spiritually as well: after the avodah of be'aspechem es tevu'as ha'aretz ("when you gather in the produce of the land"), (then) tachogu es chag Havayah shivas yamim ("you shall celebrate the festival of G‑d for seven days").8
We need to understand the connection between the festival of Sukkos — whose name (Chag HaSukkos) derives from basukkos9 teshvu shivas yamim ("you shall dwell in sukkos for seven days")10 — and be'aspechem es tevu'as ha'aretz.
We also need to understand (as is noted precisely in several discourses11) the verse9 basukkos teshvu shivas yamim kol ha'ezrach beYisrael yeshvu basukkos ("you shall dwell in sukkos for seven days; every native in Israel shall dwell in sukkos"). Seemingly, the command basukkos teshvu… is already addressed to the Jewish people as a whole and to every individual Jew — so what does the verse add by saying kol ha'ezrach beYisrael yeshvu basukkos?
We also need to understand12 why the command basukkos teshvu says "you shall dwell for seven days," whereas the command kol ha'ezrach… says simply "shall dwell" (and does not say "seven days").
Following tachogu es chag Havayah shivas yamim, the verse continues:13 ulekachtem lachem bayom harishon pri etz hadar kapos temarim va'anaf etz avos ve'arvei nachal… ("And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of a beautiful tree, branches of date palms, a bough of a thick-leaved tree, and willows of the brook…"). This mitzvah too is connected with Chag Ha'asif,14 for its time is specifically the first day — the first day of the festival that comes about through be'aspechem….
And although the mitzvah of taking the Four Kinds is not bound up with the essence of the festival to the same degree as the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah15 [as is also understood from the fact that the obligation to dwell in the sukkah applies throughout all seven days of the festival (basukkos teshvu shivas yamim) from the moment the festival is sanctified, whereas the obligation to take the Four Kinds begins only in the morning (at dawn, and preferably at sunrise16) and on the first day17] — nevertheless this mitzvah too is connected (as explained above) with the first day of Chag Ha'asif.
2) To understand this (the connection of the sukkah and the taking of the Four Kinds to the gathering of the harvest), we must first introduce the teaching of our Sages:18 pri etz hadar — this is the Holy One, blessed be He; kapos temarim — this is the Holy One, blessed be He; va'anaf etz avos — this is the Holy One, blessed be He; ve'arvei nachal — this is the Holy One, blessed be He (and they bring proofs from verses for each).
The baal hahillula explains19 that each of the Four Kinds alludes to the Holy One, blessed be He, by virtue of the oneness found in it.
Pri20 etz hadar is the esrog, which dwells (dar) on its tree from year to year.21 Over the course of a year there are many changes, from one extreme to the other — which is why it is called shanah (year), from shinui (change),22 since it contains all the changes of climate of the six seasons enumerated in the verse23 — and the esrog (which dwells on its tree from year to year) endures all these changes.
Moreover, it does not merely endure all these climates — it grows from them.
That is, not only do the changes of climate cause it no deficiency; it actually receives added growth from them.24
This is the (true) oneness of the esrog: it unites all the changes of climate, so that out of all of them one thing comes into being (the existence of the esrog).
The same is true of the lulav, kapos temarim (written defectively, כפת), which our Sages expounded to mean that it must be kafus (bound): the leaves must be such that they can be bound and tied together with the spine as one thing.25
Although there are other trees whose branches lie close to the trunk, this is not in the manner of kafus (oneness) as in the lulav.26
So too with the hadassim — anaf etz avos, specifically avos ("thick-leaved"), meaning telasa bechad kina ("three [leaves] on one stem").27
Although they are three separate leaves [a multiplicity of division — for even two constitute a plurality, since mi'ut rabim shnayim ("the minimum of a plural is two"),28 all the more so three], nevertheless they are "avos" (like a braid29), on one stem.
So too with the aravah (arvei nachal), which the Gemara calls achvana,30 because willows grow in achvah (brotherhood).31
Though they are arvei nachal — arvei in the plural — they are in brotherhood and oneness, and this is the very manner of their growth (they grow in brotherhood).
Now, the oneness in these Four Kinds is of the kind in which oneness is formed out of multiplicity.
As with the esrog: the climates of the six seasons of the year differ from one another (to the point of being opposites), yet afterwards they unite and become one thing (the existence of the esrog).
So too with the lulav: from the very fact that it must be kafus, it is understood that it has separate leaves which must be bound.32
So too with the hadas, which must have three separate leaves that nevertheless unite with one another (on one stem).
And so too with arvei nachal: they are many willows (arvei is plural33), yet they unite and grow in brotherhood.
3) This is the connection between the mitzvah of taking the Four Kinds and the festival of Sukkos: the theme of the sukkah is peace34 — that is, oneness formed out of multiplicity.
From this we understand the same regarding the festival of Sukkos, which (as noted at the beginning of the maamar) is named for basukkos teshvu: its theme is oneness formed out of multiplicity.
This is chag haSukkos shivas yamim ("the festival of Sukkos, seven days"):35 seven days represent division, for each day differs from the others.
Indeed, they encompass the division of all time.
For the seven days of the week are the seven days of the cycle.36
This is why every week we say "Today is the first day, today is the second day," and so on. Seemingly, from the creation of the world until now there have already been thousands upon myriads of days — so why do we count first, second, third day, etc.? The known explanation37 is that these are the days of the cycle, which repeat over and over.
And the meaning of the festival of Sukkos being seven days is that all seven days become one thing — the festival of Sukkos.
4) The deeper explanation of the matter (the connection of taking the Four Kinds with the festival of Sukkos) is that the oneness in both is not only a unification of separate things, but a true oneness that transcends division.
In the mitzvah of taking the Four Kinds, in addition to the oneness within each of the Four Kinds (as it is on its own) — which is a unification of separate things — all four kinds become one mitzvah,38 one entity.39
Though they are four different kinds — from one extreme to the other, as the Midrash states40 that the Four Kinds of the lulav correspond to four types among the Jewish people, from the type corresponding to the esrog, which has both taste and fragrance (Torah and good deeds), to the type corresponding to the aravah, which has neither taste nor fragrance — nevertheless they all (all four types) become agudah achas la'asos retzonecha ("one band to do Your will"). This oneness (all of them becoming one band to do Your will) is a true oneness that transcends division.41
The same applies to the oneness of the sukkah. After saying basukkos teshvu shivas yamim — the oneness of separate things (seven days uniting in one sukkah) — the verse adds kol ha'ezrach beYisrael yeshvu basukkos (simply "shall dwell," without "seven days"): a true oneness that transcends division.42
5) In light of this we can understand the connection of the festival of Sukkos (tachogu es chag Havayah shivas yamim — the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah and the mitzvah of taking the Four Kinds) to be'aspechem es tevu'as ha'aretz: be'aspechem is itself oneness — at first they are separate things, and be'ospecha means gathering them (and uniting them) together.
There are two aspects to this (paralleling the two levels of oneness in the sukkah and the Four Kinds).
First comes the gathering (and unification) of the many particulars of each kind (grain, wine and oil) on its own; after that comes the gathering (the unification) of all three kinds together, when one gathers them all into the house43 (into one place).
6) All these matters come after the avodah of the beginning of the month of Tishrei — whose letters spell reishis ("beginning").44
The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur45 — ten days — are a state of division; on Yom Kippur they are absorbed and united into one day (the day of Yom Kippur),46once a year.47 After Yom Kippur, in the four days between Yom Kippur and Sukkos, comes the preparation for fulfilling the mitzvos of basukkos teshvu and taking the Four Kinds,48 which includes the avodah of be'ospecha es ma'asecha min hasadeh — for this avodah (as noted at the beginning of the maamar) precedes and prepares for the festival of Sukkos.
However, on Yom Kippur, when there is no eating, drinking, etc., it is in a mode of detachment from worldly matters.49
Especially at the Ne'ilah prayer of Yom Kippur, when it is Yisrael uMalka bilchodohi ("Israel and the King alone").50
This is the meaning of Ne'ilah ("locking"):51 all the gates are locked, and only Israel and the King remain (inside).
To complete the intent of a dirah betachtonim ("a dwelling place for G‑d in the lower realms"),52 there must be a drawing down (of this oneness) below, into this physical world — down to the physical matters of this world. It begins with be'ospecha es ma'asecha min hasadeh: although this is a spiritual avodah (as noted at the beginning of the maamar), it is nonetheless also connected with the literal, physical gathering of the harvest (your grain, your wine and your oil).53
So too with the mitzvah of basukkos teshvu: the sechach (roof covering) of the sukkah must come migorncha umiyikvecha ("from your threshing floor and your winepress") — and within that, specifically from the waste of the threshing floor and winepress.54
And so too with the mitzvah of taking the Four Kinds: one cannot fulfill the mitzvah through kavanah (intention)55 — not through the avodah of the middos (emotional attributes), even though the Four Kinds belong to the vegetative realm and the vegetative realm corresponds to the middos,56 and not through the avodah of Malchus either, even though the purpose of the na'anuim (wavings) is to draw down into the Nukvah of Z"A (Malchus), which stands at the chest of Z"A (Zeir Anpin).57
Rather, physical Four Kinds are required, and they must touch the physical chest58 specifically.
7) This is the meaning of vechag ha'asif… be'ospecha es ma'asecha min hasadeh: the gathering of all matters together.
It begins with gathering all the matters of Torah59 (as with every form of avodah, which begins with its subject as it exists in Torah, since istakel be'oraysa uvara alma — "He looked into the Torah and created the world"60).
Every matter in Torah has six hundred thousand interpretations on the level of pshat (plain meaning), six hundred thousand on the level of remez (allusion), and likewise on the levels of drush (homiletic exposition) and sod (mystical meaning).61
One must gather and integrate all the interpretations of pshat, and likewise all those of remez, of drush and of sod — and afterwards gather and integrate all four parts together.
This is ve'asafta deganecha vesiroshecha veyitzharecha: grain (bread) is the revealed dimension of Torah; wine is razin de'oraysa (the secrets of Torah); and oil is razin derazin (the secrets of the secrets).62 The avodah of ve'asafta deganecha vesiroshecha veyitzharecha is twofold:
the gathering and integration of the many matters within each category itself (the revealed, the secrets, and the secrets of the secrets); and also the gathering and integration of all the categories together, elevating them to a level beyond division — up to the level of asar dechalil kula ("the place that includes all")63 and higher still.
Although this matter (the unification of all matters of Torah) will be realized primarily with the coming of Moshiach, who will teach the entire people64 the entire Torah — including the secrets of Torah and the secrets of the secrets — as it is written,65 yishakeini minshikos pihu ("Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth"), which Rashi explains to mean that in the Time to Come the secret of its (the Torah's) reasons and its hidden treasures will be revealed, and all this will then be in a mode of sight66 — nevertheless, since to'ameha chaim zachu ("those who taste it merit life"),67 a foretaste of this, at least in a mode of tasting, can and must take place now.
From this (from ve'asafta deganecha vesiroshecha veyitzharecha as it exists in Torah) it extends to ve'asafta… in every aspect of a person's spiritual avodah, and further still to ve'asafta deganecha vesiroshecha veyitzharecha in its literal sense — physical grain, wine and oil.
The same applies to the oneness of dwelling in the sukkah (which follows the avodah of ve'asafta). As explained, it has two levels: basukkos teshvu shivas yamim — oneness as it still relates to seven days (division); and kol ha'ezrach beYisrael yeshvu basukkos (unqualified, transcending the matter of seven days). This will be realized primarily in the Time to Come — as is known68 that ezrach refers to what will shine forth (lehazriach) in the Time to Come — yet even so, a glimmer of it exists now as well.
As the baal hahillula explains (on this verse):69 that which will shine forth in the Time to Come within the Jewish people, in their inner being — even now yeshvu basukkos: it is revealed upon them (now) in the form of sukkos, as a makif (encompassing light).
So too with the Four Kinds (the taking of which, as noted, comes after dwelling in the sukkah): each of the Four Kinds is "this is the Holy One, blessed be He." This is so even now, but now it is concealed; its revelation will come in the Time to Come, when venigla kvod Havayah vera'u chol basar… ("the glory of G‑d will be revealed, and all flesh will see…").70
Then the gathering of your grain, wine and oil will also be different: there will be no need for ve'asafta (for the Jewish people to do the gathering); rather, ve'amdu zarim vera'u tzonchem uvnei nechar ikareichem… ("strangers will stand and tend your flocks, and foreigners will be your farmers…").71 Dwelling in the sukkah too will be in a loftier manner — they will dwell in the sukkah made of the skin of the Leviathan.72 And "this is the Holy One, blessed be He" (in the Four Kinds) will then be openly revealed, as in kesheani nichtav kach ani nikra ("as I am written, so shall I be pronounced").73
Yet a foretaste of (all) this exists even now, as explained regarding kol ha'ezrach beYisrael yeshvu basukkos — and all the more so in the time of the end of exile (ikvesa diMeshicha, "the footsteps of Moshiach"), when only a few moments remain, and the Torah has promised that the Jewish people will ultimately do teshuvah at the end of their exile and will immediately be redeemed74 — and with joy and gladness of heart.
