Basukkos teshvu shivas yamim… lema'an yed'u doroseichem ki vasukkos hoshavti es Bnei Yisrael behotzi'i osam me'eretz Mitzrayim ("You shall dwell in sukkos for seven days… so that your generations will know that I made the Children of Israel dwell in sukkos when I brought them out of the land of Egypt").1
The Alter Rebbe cites this verse in his Shulchan Aruch at the beginning of the laws of Sukkah,2 and states precisely, in his golden words, that (vasukkos hoshavti…) "these were His Clouds of Glory, with which He surrounded them for shade, etc.,3 and in commemoration of this He commanded us to make sukkos made for shade."
The Rebbe Maharash, the baal hahillula, explains in the discourses for the festival of Sukkos that he delivered a hundred years ago4 that the sechach (roof covering) of the sukkah is made from the cloud of the incense of Yom Kippur5 — for a cloud is like shade.
On Yom Kippur, however, it is still concealed (bakeseh6), and it comes into revelation leyom chageinu ("for the day of our festival"),6 on Sukkos.7
Now, a sukkah must have "its shade greater than its sun,"8 meaning that a sukkah also has some sun,9 only its shade must exceed its sun.
Similarly, on Yom Kippur there is also the element of "sun," but the essence of the service of Yom Kippur is "shade."
For the two elements of "sun" and "shade" in the services of the Beis HaMikdash — and likewise in the prayers, which were instituted in place of the offerings10 — are the service of the korbanos (offerings) and the service of the ketores (incense).11
Of the offerings it is written12 lachmi le'ishai… ("My bread for My fires…"), and "My fires" — both the fire brought by human hands and the fire that descended from Heaven13 — represent heat, "sun."
The service of the ketores, whose essence is the cloud, represents "shade," as mentioned.
This is why Yom Kippur has the element of "sun": even then there is the service of the offerings.
But the essence of the service of Yom Kippur is the service of the ketores, "shade"; and from this it extends to Sukkos, leyom chageinu, that the shade must be greater than the sun.
2) The difference between korbanos and ketores will be understood from the names by which they are called in the Holy Tongue [in keeping with the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov14].
Korban comes from kiruv, drawing near,15 as my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains in his hillula discourses16 that the offerings mean drawing one's faculties and senses near, and raza dekorbana (the mystery of the offering) ascends to raza de'Ein Sof (the mystery of the Infinite).17
Ketores means a bond, kesher [for every kesher in Scripture is rendered in the Targum with the word ketar18]: not only is one near to G‑dliness, even utterly near, but one is also bound to G‑dliness, utterly bound.
The difference between nearness (korbanos) and binding (ketores) is that when one is near to G‑dliness, even utterly near, one is still a separate existence.
This is why of the offerings it is written lachmi le'ishai [and the service of the offerings is "sun," as mentioned]: the service of the offerings is, in general, a service based on reason and understanding;19 and even what is drawn down from Above through it — nachas ruach lefanai she'amarti vena'aseh retzoni ("a satisfaction before Me that I spoke and My will was done")20 — relates to reason and understanding. Love based on reason and understanding is felt,21 and so heat applies to it — the intense flame22 of love.11
The service of the ketores, by contrast, is in general the service of re'usa deliba (the heart's innermost will), which is above reason and understanding,23 where nothing is felt.
This is why ketores means a bond: it is binding and cleaving to the Or Ein Sof (the Infinite Light), blessed be He, without any feeling at all11 — one has no existence of one's own, and one's whole existence is only one's bond with Him, until they become entirely one.
In the well-known words,24 bechad ketira iskatarna bei beKudsha Brich Hu, bei achida ("With one bond I am bound to the Holy One, blessed be He; to Him I am attached") [although it continues bei lehita ("in Him I am aflame"), since bei lehita comes (there) after bei achida, it carries no feeling] — bei achida meaning that one becomes truly one with the Infinite Light.
This is also why the offerings were brought on the outer altar, while the ketores was on the inner altar.25
It is known that these two altars, in the soul of man, are the outer heart and the inner heart, as explained in Likkutei Torah,26 and at length in the discourses of the Tzemach Tzedek.27
The service of the offerings is therefore on the outer altar, because service with fervor belongs to the outer heart.
Also, because the outer heart is where birurim (refinements) apply — that is, there is still an existence that must be refined and elevated to holiness.
The inner heart, however, is above birurim, and the service of the inner heart is the love and bond that stem from the essence of the soul, above reason and understanding.28
3) Now, the difference between the service of the offerings and that of the ketores also concerns the things refined through them.
Offerings come only from permitted things,29 like all matters of Torah and mitzvos, for "only what is pure and permitted in your mouth is fit for the work of Heaven."30
Among the spices of the ketores, however, there were also impure things, such as musk, which is the blood of a certain animal.31
Also,32 the ketores must have specifically eleven spices (to the point that one who omitted any one of its spices incurs the death penalty33 — the opposite of what ketores is about34), and the number eleven belongs to the sitra achra (the "other side," unholiness).
For it is known that in holiness the number is ten, as it is said:35 "Ten and not nine; ten and not eleven" — while eleven belongs to the sitra achra: "the eleven crowns of impurity."36
The explanation: it is written37 ve'Atah mechayeh es kulam ("And You give life to them all") — do not read mechayeh ("give life") but mehaveh ("bring into being")38: the life, and the very existence, of all created beings comes from the Infinite Light; in themselves they have no existence at all.
As the baal hahillula explains in the discourse beginning Mi chamochah ba'eilim Havayah mi kamochah nedar bakodesh39 (which he would deliver once every two or three years in order to purify the atmosphere of the world40): although the world is real and not an illusion, nevertheless leis bar minach ("there is nothing besides You"),41 for the essence and true existence of every thing is the G‑dly power that brings it into being.
From this it follows that even the sitra achra and the three completely impure kelipos must be said to receive vitality from the Infinite Light, for otherwise they would have no existence at all.
However, the vitality that sustains them is in the mode of a makif, hovering over them from above.
[Although there is a spark of holiness within them too, that spark is in exile within them (to the point that the spark itself becomes like evil, as the Rebbe (Rashab) explains in the discourse beginning Padah veshalom nafshi42); that they live and endure is from the holy vitality that is a makif over them from above.43]
This is why in holiness the number is ten and in the sitra achra it is eleven.
Every thing in the world is composed of ten elements, as written in the Pardes;44 in holiness the number is therefore ten, because the vitality is united with the thing it animates and is not counted separately.
In the kelipos and sitra achra, however, where the vitality is a makif over them from above, the vitality is counted separately.45
This is why the ketores must have specifically eleven spices: through the service of the ketores, even the sitra achra, whose number is eleven, is transformed to holiness.
It may be suggested that this difference between the offerings and the ketores, regarding the things refined through them, stems from the difference between them in the person serving: the service of the offerings is in the outer heart, and the service of the ketores is in the inner heart.
The explanation: when the service is measured and limited and the person serving is still a separate existence, he must take care that there be no self-interest in his service — all the more so no self-interest from matters belonging to his own existence.
But when the service is above measure and limitation, through it even evil is transformed to good,46 as with teshuvah, through which willful sins become not only like unintentional ones, but like merits47 [and indeed not only "like" merits (with the comparative kaf), but actual merits48], as explained at length in Torah Or.49
This is also the connection of the service of the ketores to Yom Kippur: the teshuvah of Yom Kippur is the very essence of teshuvah (teshuvah ila'ah, "higher teshuvah"),50 and the service of the Ten Days of Teshuvah as a whole [all the more so of Yom Kippur51] is on the level of yechidah (the soul's innermost essence) — as in the well-known teaching of the Alter Rebbe52 on the saying of our Sages53 "here, for the individual (yachid)," that the service of the Ten Days of Teshuvah is on the level of yechidah. And since there is no counterpart to yechidah on the side of unholiness — bavu'ah divavu'ah leis lehu ("a reflection of a reflection they do not have")54 — through the service and teshuvah of Yom Kippur even willful sins are transformed into merits.
4) This is basukkos teshvu… lema'an yed'u doroseichem ki vasukkos hoshavti…: this knowledge is (not merely a matter of the intention behind the mitzvah, but also) part of the fulfillment of the mitzvah55 (as is also evident from the wording of the Alter Rebbe in his Shulchan Aruch56).
For the sechach of the sukkah is made (as mentioned) from the cloud of the incense of Yom Kippur [the sukkah being connected to the cloud of incense both because the sukkah is made for shade and a cloud is like shade (as mentioned), and because vasukkos hoshavti refers to the Clouds of Glory]. The cloud of the incense of Yom Kippur is the makif that is above reason and understanding, and on Sukkos this makif must be drawn into inwardness — basukkos teshvu — and drawing it into inwardness is accomplished specifically through Daas (knowledge), as explained at length in the hemshech Vechachah of the baal hahillula.57
Especially through taking the Four Kinds, which denote unity,58 through which Daas is drawn (also into the Nukva59) further down, into the inner being of each and every Jew.60
5) The deeper explanation will be understood from what the baal hahillula explains in the series of discourses mentioned above61 about the descent of the soul into the body, and likewise the descent of the mitzvos and their investment in physical things [as with the mitzvah of the offerings, which require specifically a physical animal; the ketores, made specifically from eleven physical spices; and the sechach of the sukkah (which parallels the ketores), made from a physical thing, the waste of the threshing floor and winepress;62 and so with the other mitzvos] — that it is a descent for the sake of ascent.
The root of the soul is in Tikkun (the world of rectification), while the root of the body and the animal soul, and likewise the root of the physical things in which the mitzvos are invested, is in Tohu (the world of chaos), which preceded Tikkun.
By descending below, investing itself in the body and animal soul, and engaging in Torah and mitzvos invested in physical things, the soul refines the sparks of Tohu that fell down into the body, the animal soul and the physical things (in which the mitzvos are invested), and elevates them to their source; and through this the lights of Tohu, which are higher than the lights of Tikkun, are drawn to them — as it is known that the lights of Tikkun are few, while in Tohu there were abundant lights.63
Especially according to what is explained there64 that the abundance of the light of Tohu is not only an abundance in quantity (the same kind as the lights of Tikkun, only in far greater amount), but that the lights of Tohu are of an entirely different kind.
This follows all the more from what our Sages said65 about the light created on the first day, that with it a person could see "from one end of the world to the other." The meaning of "from one end of the world to the other" (though seemingly it should have said "from the beginning of the world to its end") is that all the worlds as a whole divide into two categories, alma de'iskasya (the hidden world) and alma de'isgalya (the revealed world); and "from one end of the world to the other end" means from the end of the revealed world, at its top, to the end of the hidden world, at its bottom. From this it is understood that the abundance of this light (the light created on the first day), compared to the light of the other days, is not merely greater in quantity but beyond all comparison.
And all this is within the world of Tikkun itself [for the light created on the first day also belongs to Tikkun], where the lights as a whole are few.
From this we understand, all the more so, the abundance of light in Tohu: in addition to its abundance in quantity, it was (and this is its chief advantage) a light utterly beyond comparison with the light of Tikkun.
And when the soul, whose root is in Tikkun, refines and rectifies the sparks that fell down into physical things, the abundant lights of Tohu are drawn into the abundant vessels of Tikkun.
This is why the soul's descent into the body is a descent for the sake of ascent. The root of the soul is (as mentioned) in Tikkun [but within Tikkun itself at the very highest level, for "Israel arose in thought"66]; and by descending me'igra ramah levira amikta ("from a lofty roof to a deep pit")67 and refining the sparks that fell lowest of all (into the deep pit) — and that they fell lowest of all is itself because their root is highest of all68 — an added elevation is brought about in the soul, higher than it was before its descent.69
As in the well-known teaching of the Arizal on the verse70 ki lo al halechem levado yichyeh ha'adam ki al kol motza fi Havayah yichyeh ha'adam ("man does not live by bread alone, but by everything that comes from the mouth of G‑d does man live"): that bread sustains man (although bread is vegetative and man is a speaking being) is not due to the bread alone, but to the utterance of G‑d within the bread — the utterance71 tadshei ha'aretz deshe ("Let the earth sprout vegetation").
And that man needs specifically the utterance of G‑d within the bread (although G‑d's word is invested in man too, from the utterance72 na'aseh adam — "Let us make man") is because the utterance of G‑d within the bread derives from Tohu; therefore it is specifically through it that man, who derives from Tikkun, lives.
As with bread, so with all of a person's affairs [for "bread" includes all eating and drinking73 and all human needs as well74], including his service in Torah and mitzvos: by refining physical things [by doing them for the sake of Heaven,75 and all the more so by fulfilling mitzvos with the physical things themselves], "by the utterance of G‑d" within physical things "does man live" — an elevation is added to his soul, higher than it was before its descent.
And since the light of Tohu is utterly beyond comparison (as mentioned), the elevation added to the soul is also beyond all comparison.76
6) In light of this we can understand more deeply how much greater the service of the ketores is than the service of the offerings. Through the service of the ketores even the sparks that fell into the three completely impure kelipos are refined, until even willful sins become like merits; and since whatever fell lowest of all shows that its root is highest of all, it is understood77 that these sparks (which fell into the impure kelipos, and especially into willful sins) come from higher even than the sparks and (permitted) physical things refined through the service of the offerings.
That is, within Tohu itself they are on a loftier level.
This is what our Sages said:78 bimkom sheba'alei teshuvah omdin ein tzaddikim gemurim yecholim la'amod bo ("In the place where baalei teshuvah stand, even the perfectly righteous cannot stand") — because baalei teshuvah refine from the three impure kelipos, while the perfectly righteous refine only from kelipas nogah.79
This is also why the revelations of the Time to Come depend (primarily) on our deeds and service specifically during the time of exile80 [and within exile itself, in the time of ikvesa diMeshicha, "the footsteps of Moshiach"]: the "eleven crowns of impurity" prevail chiefly in the time of exile [and especially in ikvesa diMeshicha], and therefore through our deeds and service in exile we draw down unlimited light — eileh toldos Peretz ("these are the generations of Peretz"),81 where toldos is written full82 — higher even than the "full" toldos at the time of creation83 (eileh toldos hashamayim veha'aretz behibar'am — "these are the generations of heaven and earth when they were created"84), when "the world was created in its fullness."85
This is also the superiority of the ketores of Yom Kippur over the ketores of the rest of the year: the ketores of Yom Kippur represents the teshuvah through which willful sins become merits86 [for the service of Yom Kippur is on the level of yechidah of the soul; that is, within the Ten Days of Teshuvah themselves ("here, for the individual") the chief revelation (and service) of yechidah is on Yom Kippur, achas bashanah ("once a year")87; and that willful sins become actual merits is through the service of the level of yechidah] — and this [willful sins being transformed into merits] reaches the level of penimiyus Atik (the innermost dimension of Atik).86
This too relates to Yom Kippur, as it is known88 that on Yom Kippur Malchus ascends into Atik.
And this also becomes a preparation and prelude to the revelation of the Time to Come [which will also come specifically through the service of teshuvah, as the saying goes,89 Moshiach asa le'asva tzaddikaya bis'yuvta — "Moshiach comes to bring the righteous to teshuvah"], when penimiyus Atik will be revealed.90
7) Now, all the elevations described above, brought about in the soul specifically through service in this world, and in this world during the time of exile, were in it even before its descent.
As is understood from the teaching of the Maggid91 on the saying of our Sages "Israel arose in thought"66: it is like a son whose image is engraved in his father's mind; and since for G‑d past and future are one, even before Israel were created their image was engraved in His thought.
From this it is understood that even the elevation brought about in the soul through its descent "from a lofty roof to a deep pit," and its service there in the depth and inwardness of the heart — and within that, at its loftiest level (the very essence of the point of the heart)92 — through which it rises higher than it was at its root, in the level of ha'Elokim asher nesanah ("G‑d who gave it")93: this image too (of the son in his ultimate perfection) was engraved in His thought.
But this is in potential; for this elevation to be actual,94 it comes about through the soul's descent below and its actual service in Torah study and the fulfillment of mitzvos — especially through the service of the ketores of Yom Kippur, which is the service of teshuvah, and through dwelling in the sukkah and taking the Four Kinds, which bring about the drawing down and revelation of the makif of the cloud of incense of Yom Kippur.
So too in the days between Yom Kippur and Sukkos, when "this one is busy with his sukkah and that one with his lulav."95
This is the reason the first day of Sukkos is "the first for the reckoning of sins":96 during these four days all of Israel are busy (only) with mitzvos, so it is not possible that they do anything undesirable.
It is understood that when these four days are as they should be, then even after the reckoning begins it is of an entirely different kind — as is known regarding why even the perfectly righteous say Al chet:97 chet in the sense of a deficiency,98 in the subtlest of subtleties.
And "the first for the reckoning of sins" does not refer to sins in the plain sense (including one who could have protested and did not99), but to avonos in the sense of distortion and crookedness — and even that does not really apply; it is distortion and crookedness of the utmost subtlety, as explained above100 on the verse101 ki chashalta ba'avonecha ("for you have stumbled in your iniquity").
Accordingly, the ketores of Yom Kippur too, which represents the teshuvah that transforms willful sins into merits, likewise concerns sins (and willful sins) of the utmost subtlety.
After Yom Kippur, the makif of the cloud of incense is drawn into the sukkah and lulav while they are still ordinary, permitted objects that Israel prepare and make fit for the mitzvah,
