Likkutei Sichos Vol. 19 – Devarim 2 – Moshe's Role in Mishneh Torah: Investment and Comprehension

This class explores how Moshe serves as an intermediary in Mishneh Torah by investing the Torah within his own understanding, enabling deeper comprehension for all. It examines the distinction between the first four books and Mishneh Torah, and the unique connection to teshuvah.

In Mishneh Torah, Moshe serves as an intermediary “by way of investment,” meaning that the Torah becomes invested within Moshe’s understanding. The fact that Mishneh Torah reviews the entire Torah enables understanding and comprehension in the other parts of the Torah as well.

The Sages state, “Moshe said Mishneh Torah on his own.” It must be understood: What is the difference between the first four books of the Torah and Mishneh Torah? After all, Mishneh Torah was also said with Ruach HaKodesh.

The explanation is that Moshe is the intermediary who connects the Jewish people with the Infinite Light and connects them with the Torah.

The Torah, in its essence, is above human understanding. It descends into the world by way of “passage,” meaning that it does not change as a result of its descent. For this reason, it remains above comprehension.

In Mishneh Torah, however, Moshe’s role as an intermediary operates “by way of investment”: the Torah becomes invested within Moshe’s understanding. This is also why, according to all opinions, adjacent passages in Mishneh Torah may be interpreted in relation to one another.

The fact that Mishneh Torah reviews the entire Torah brings about understanding and comprehension in the other parts of the Torah as well.

This investment is not merely a descent. Rather, it is a revelation of Hashem’s Essence, which is not limited by distinctions between higher and lower levels and can therefore be revealed even below.

This is also the connection to the rebuke contained in Mishneh Torah, whose ultimate purpose is teshuvah.

In teshuvah, a person does not consciously feel the Divine light coming from above. The awakening to return appears to arise from within the person himself.

In truth, however, the inspiration for teshuvah also comes from above. It originates in Hashem’s Essence and is therefore higher than all revealed levels of Divine light. For this reason, it can affect a person even when the light from above is not consciously felt.
