We are learning Parshas Eikev, Chamishi. In this section, we will go through the pesukim, translating and explaining each one, and also look at the Rashi commentary to understand the deeper meaning and lessons that the Torah is teaching us in these verses.

The verse begins: "And now, Yisroel, what is Hashem your God asking from you?" The Torah is telling us that after everything that has happened, all that Hashem asks from us is to fear Him—li'yirah es Hashem. The verse continues: to go in all of His ways, to love Him, and to serve Hashem your God with all your heart and with all your soul. The teacher translates and explains each phrase: What does Hashem want from you? To fear Him, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and soul. The focus here is that the main thing Hashem is asking is for us to have yiras Shomayim, fear of Heaven, and to follow in His ways with love and service.

ועתה ישראל - אף על פי שעשיתם כל זאת עודנו רחמיו וחבתו עליכם ומכל מה שחטאתם לפניו אינו שואל מכם כי אם ליראה וגו'.

On the words Ve'atah Yisroel, Rashi explains: Even though you have done all these things—meaning, even though you have sinned and made mistakes—Hashem's mercy and love are still upon you. Despite everything you have done, He is not asking anything difficult from you. All He asks is that you fear Him, as the verse says. The teacher emphasizes that Hashem's love and closeness remain, and that the only thing He asks is for us to have yiras Shomayim, to fear Him and follow His ways.

כי אם ליראה וגו' - (ברכות לג) רבותינו דרשו מכאן הכל בידי שמים חוץ מיראת שמים

The teacher quotes the words ki im li'yirah—but only to fear. He brings the teaching of Chazal: Our teachers learned from this verse, "Everything is in the hands of Heaven except for the fear of Heaven." That means that everything that happens to a person is decreed from above, but whether a person fears Hashem or not—that is up to the person. That is why Hashem is asking us for yiras Shomayim, because that is the one thing that is in our hands to choose.

יג לִשְׁמֹ֞ר אֶת־מִצְוֹת יְהוָה֙ וְאֶת־חֻקֹּתָ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֛ר אָֽנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ הַיּ֑וֹם לְט֖וֹב לָֽךְ׃

The verse continues: "To keep the commandments of Hashem and His statutes that I command you today, for your good." The teacher translates: To keep the mitzvos and the chukim, the statutes, that I am commanding you today, so that it will be good for you. The Torah is telling us that the purpose of the mitzvos is for our benefit, that we should have good as a result of keeping them.

(יג) לשמור את מצות ה' - ואף היא לא לחנם, אלא "לטוב לך". שתקבלו שכר:

On the words lishmor es mitzvos Hashem, Rashi says: Even this is not for nothing. It is for your good—le'tov loch. The teacher explains that the reason for keeping the mitzvos is so that you will receive reward. Hashem is not asking us to do mitzvos for no reason; it is all for our benefit, so that we will be rewarded for our actions.

יד הֵ֚ן לַֽיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּשְׁמֵ֣י הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם הָאָ֖רֶץ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּֽהּ׃

The verse says: "Behold, to Hashem your God belong the heavens and the heavens of the heavens, the earth and everything that is in it." The teacher translates: Everything belongs to Hashem—the heavens, the highest heavens, the earth, and all that is in it. He explains that even though everything belongs to Hashem, as the verse continues, it is only in your fathers that Hashem desired, from everything. Only in your fathers did Hashem choose, to love them, and He chose their descendants after them—you—from all the nations, as it is today. The teacher elaborates that just as you see yourselves being the most beloved among all the nations, that is the special relationship that Hashem has with the Jewish people.

(יד) הן לה' אלהיך - הכל. ואף על פי כן, "רק באבותיך חשק ה'" מן הכל:

On the words hen laHashem Elokecha, Rashi explains: Everything belongs to Hashem. And nevertheless, as the verse continues, "Only in your fathers did Hashem desire from everything." The teacher explains that even though Hashem owns everything, He specifically chose your fathers—the Avos—and their descendants, the Jewish people, from among all the nations. This shows the unique love and relationship that Hashem has with the Jewish people.

טו רַ֧ק בַּֽאֲבֹתֶ֛יךָ חָשַׁ֥ק יְהוָ֖ה לְאַֽהֲבָ֣ה אוֹתָ֑ם וַיִּבְחַ֞ר בְּזַרְעָ֣ם אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם בָּכֶ֛ם מִכָּל־הָֽעַמִּ֖ים כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

The verse says, "Only in your fathers did Hashem desire, to love them, and He chose their seed after them, you, from all the nations, as this day." The teacher explains that even though everything belongs to Hashem—the heavens, the earth, and all that is in them—nevertheless, it is only in your fathers that Hashem desired. He loved them and chose their descendants after them, meaning you, from all the nations, as it is today. The teacher emphasizes that just as you see yourselves being the ones who are most beloved from all the nations as of this day, so too, Hashem's special relationship with the Jewish people is evident.

(טו) בכם - כמו שאתם רואים אתכם חשוקים "מכל העמים" ה"יום הזה":

On the words "Bachem"—the teacher explains, just as you see yourselves as being the ones who are most beloved from all the nations as of this day. In other words, you can see with your own eyes that you are the chosen and beloved ones among all the nations, as it is today.

טז וּמַלְתֶּ֕ם אֵ֖ת עָרְלַ֣ת לְבַבְכֶ֑ם וְעָ֨רְפְּכֶ֔ם לֹ֥א תַקְשׁ֖וּ עֽוֹד׃

The verse says, "Umaltem Es Orlas Levavchem Ve'orefchem Lo Sakshu Od"—you shall circumcise the foreskin of your heart and no longer be stiff-necked. The teacher explains that this means to remove the blockage and covering of your heart, and to stop being stubborn or resistant. The idea is to open your heart to Hashem and not to be obstinate anymore.

(טז) ערלת לבבכם - אוטם לבבכם וכיסויו:

On the words "Orlas Levavchem"—the teacher explains, as Rashi says, this refers to the blockage and covering of your heart. In other words, it means the things that prevent your heart from being open and receptive to Hashem.

The verse says, "Ki Hashem Elokeichem Hu Elokei HaElohim VaAdonei HaAdonim HaKel HaGadol HaGibor VeHanora Asher Lo Yisa Panim VeLo Yikach Shochad"—for Hashem your God is the God of all gods and the master of all masters, the great, mighty, and awesome God, who does not show favor and does not take a bribe. The teacher explains that Hashem is the master of all masters, and no master can protect you or save you from His hand. He will not show favor if you cast off His yoke. The teacher continues, describing Hashem's power: He executes the judgment of the orphan and the widow, and He loves the stranger to give him bread and a garment. This is a description of Hashem's greatness and humility. The teacher points out that this is a very important point, as the entire prayer of Yaakov Avinu was based on this idea—Yaakov asked Hashem to give him bread to eat and a garment to wear.

(יז) ואדני האדנים - לא יוכל שום אדון להציל אתכם מידו:

On the words "VaAdonei HaAdonim"—the teacher explains, as Rashi says, that no master can protect you and save you from Hashem's hand. In other words, Hashem is the ultimate authority, and no one can rescue you from Him if you are deserving of punishment.

לא ישא פנים - אם תפרקו עולו:

On the words "Lo Yisa Panim"—the teacher explains, if you cast off His yoke, Hashem will not show you favor. That is, if you reject Hashem's authority, He will not overlook your actions or grant you special treatment.

ולא יקח שחד - לפייסו בממון:

On the words "Lo Yikach Shochad"—the teacher explains, Hashem does not take a bribe to appease Him with money. In other words, you cannot buy Hashem's favor or forgiveness with material wealth.

יח עֹשֶׂ֛ה מִשְׁפַּ֥ט יָת֖וֹם וְאַלְמָנָ֑ה וְאֹהֵ֣ב גֵּ֔ר לָ֥תֶת ל֖וֹ לֶ֥חֶם וְשִׂמְלָֽה׃

This verse says that Hashem executes the judgment of the orphan and the widow, and He loves the stranger to give him bread and a garment. The teacher explains that this is a description of Hashem's power: He is the one who stands up for those who are vulnerable, like the orphan and the widow, and He shows love to the stranger by providing for his basic needs, such as bread and clothing.

(יח) עשה משפט יתום ואלמנה - הרי גבורה. ואצל גבורתו אתה מוצא ענוותנותו:

On the words Oseh Mishpat Yosom VeAlmanah—He executes the judgment of the orphan and the widow—Rashi says that this is a sign of Hashem's strength. The teacher elaborates that next to Hashem's strength, you also find a description of His humility. In other words, even though Hashem is so powerful, He lowers Himself to care for the lowly and the needy, showing both His might and His humility together.

ואהב גר לתת לו לחם ושמלה - ודבר חשוב הוא זה. שכל עצמו של יעקב אבינו על זה נתפלל, (בראשית כח, כ) "ונתן לי לחם לאכול ובגד ללבוש":

On the words VeOhev Ger Lases Lo Lechem VeSimlah—He loves the stranger to give him bread and a garment—Rashi says that this is a very important thing. The teacher explains that the entire prayer of Yaakov Avinu was about this. Yaakov prayed, as it says in Bereishis, 'If You will give me bread to eat and a garment to wear.' So, the fact that Hashem provides bread and clothing for the stranger is not a small matter; it is something that our forefather Yaakov specifically prayed for, highlighting its significance.

יט וַֽאֲהַבְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־הַגֵּ֑ר כִּֽי־גֵרִ֥ים הֱיִיתֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

This verse commands, 'You shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.' The teacher reads the verse and then asks: How is that a reason? Why should our own experience as strangers obligate us to love the stranger?

(יט) כי גרים הייתם - מום שבך, אל תאמר לחברך:

On the words Ki Gerim Heyisem—for you were strangers—Rashi explains: a blemish that is in yourself, do not say it to your friend. The teacher clarifies that since you yourself were a stranger, you should not use that as a reason to look down on or remind another person of their own status as a stranger. In other words, do not taunt someone else with a flaw or difficulty that you yourself have experienced.

[ספר המצוות מ"ע רז]

כ אֶת־יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ תִּירָ֖א אֹת֣וֹ תַֽעֲבֹ֑ד וּב֣וֹ תִדְבָּ֔ק וּבִשְׁמ֖וֹ תִּשָּׁבֵֽעַ׃

This verse says, 'You shall fear Hashem your God, you shall serve Him, you shall cleave to Him, and in His name you shall swear.' The teacher explains each phrase: You should fear God, you should serve Him, you should connect to Him, and in His name you should swear. The teacher emphasizes the progression: first comes fear of Hashem, then serving Him, then cleaving to Him, and finally, after you have all these traits, you are able to swear in His name. This order shows that swearing in Hashem's name is only appropriate after one has achieved all the previous levels of fear, service, and attachment to Hashem.

(כ) את ה' אלהיך תירא - ותעבוד לו. ותדבק בו. ולאחר שיהיו בך כל המידות הללו, אז בשמו תשבע.

On the words Es Hashem Elokecha Tira—You shall fear Hashem your God—Rashi explains: You should fear God, and then you will serve Him, and you will cleave to Him. And after you have all these traits, then you will swear in His name. The teacher highlights that swearing in Hashem's name comes only after a person has reached the levels of fear, service, and attachment to Hashem, as described in the verse and explained by Rashi.

[ספר המצוות מ"ע ו]

כא ה֥וּא תְהִלָּֽתְךָ֖ וְה֣וּא אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֣ה אִתְּךָ֗ אֶת־הַגְּדֹלֹ֤ת וְאֶת־הַנּֽוֹרָאֹת֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָא֖וּ עֵינֶֽיךָ׃

This verse says, 'He is your praise and He is your God, who has done with you these great and awesome things that your eyes have seen.' The teacher explains that Hashem is the one who is your praise, meaning all of your praise and glory is due to Him. He is your God, the one who has performed for you these great and awesome deeds that you yourselves have witnessed. The teacher emphasizes that the greatness and awesomeness refer to the miracles and wonders that Hashem did for the Jewish people, things that were seen with their own eyes. This is a reminder that their relationship with Hashem is not theoretical or based on stories from the past, but on direct experience of His greatness and His involvement in their lives.

כב בְּשִׁבְעִ֣ים נֶ֔פֶשׁ יָֽרְד֥וּ אֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ מִצְרָ֑יְמָה וְעַתָּ֗ה שָֽׂמְךָ֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ כְּכֽוֹכְבֵ֥י הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם לָרֹֽב׃

The verse says, 'With seventy souls your fathers descended to Egypt, and now Hashem your God has made you as numerous as the stars of the heavens.' The teacher explains that originally, when the Jewish people went down to Egypt, they were only seventy people. But now, Hashem has multiplied them to be as many as the stars in the sky. This is a fulfillment of the promise to the Avos, the forefathers, that their descendants would be numerous. The teacher points out that this is a tremendous increase, showing Hashem's kindness and the fulfillment of His word. It is meant to inspire gratitude and recognition of Hashem's ongoing involvement with the Jewish people.

דברים פרק יא

א וְאָ֣הַבְתָּ֔ אֵ֖ת יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְשָֽׁמַרְתָּ֣ מִשְׁמַרְתּ֗וֹ וְחֻקֹּתָ֧יו וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֛יו וּמִצְוֹתָ֖יו כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

This verse commands, 'And you shall love Hashem your God, and you shall keep His guard, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments all the days.' The teacher explains that the Torah is telling us to love Hashem, to keep His guard (meaning to be careful with His mitzvos), His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments. This is a comprehensive command to observe all aspects of the Torah, not just the ones that are logical or that we understand, but also the ones that are decrees. The teacher emphasizes that this is something that applies at all times, 'all the days,' and is a central part of our relationship with Hashem.

The verse says, 'And you shall know today, for it is not your children who did not know and who did not see the chastisement of Hashem your God, His greatness, His strong hand, and His outstretched arm.' The teacher explains that Moshe is speaking to the generation that experienced the miracles and the discipline of Hashem firsthand. He is not speaking to their children, who did not see or know these things directly. The teacher elaborates that this is an important distinction: the people being addressed cannot claim ignorance, because they themselves witnessed Hashem's greatness, His strong hand, and His outstretched arm. This includes all the miracles in Egypt, at the sea, and in the desert. The teacher also notes that the verse is emphasizing personal responsibility, because the people themselves saw and experienced these events.

(ב) וידעתם היום - תנו לב לדעת ולהבין ולקבל תוכחתי:

On the words 'VeYedatem HaYom'—'And you shall know today'—Rashi explains: 'Give your heart to know, to understand, and to accept my rebuke.' The teacher elaborates that Rashi is telling us that this is not just about intellectual knowledge, but about internalizing and accepting the message. It means to pay attention, to understand deeply, and to be willing to accept Hashem's rebuke or instruction. The teacher emphasizes that this is a call for a deeper level of awareness and responsiveness, not just surface-level knowledge.

כי לא את בניכם - אני מדבר עכשיו, שיוכלו לומר, אנו לא ידענו ולא ראינו בכל זה:

This verse continues the theme, saying, 'For it is not your children that I am speaking to now, who could say, "We did not know and we did not see all this."' The teacher explains that Moshe is making it clear that he is addressing the people who actually experienced all the miracles and events. They cannot claim that they were unaware or that they did not witness these things, because they saw them with their own eyes. The teacher points out that this is an important point about accountability: those who saw and experienced are the ones being spoken to, and they have a greater responsibility to remember and to act on what they witnessed.

ג וְאֶת־אֹֽתֹתָיו֙ וְאֶֽת־מַעֲשָׂ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה בְּת֣וֹךְ מִצְרָ֑יִם לְפַרְעֹ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֖יִם וּלְכָל־אַרְצֽוֹ׃

This verse is part of Moshe recounting to the Jewish people all the wonders and miracles that Hashem did for them in Egypt. He is reminding them about the signs and the deeds that Hashem performed in the midst of Egypt, specifically to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and to all his land. The teacher explains that Moshe is emphasizing to the people that they themselves witnessed these miracles and that Hashem did all these things openly, in front of everyone, to demonstrate His power and involvement in their lives.

This verse continues the recounting of Hashem's miracles, focusing on what He did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and chariots. The teacher explains that Hashem caused the waters of the Yam Suf to inundate them as they were chasing after the Jewish people. Hashem destroyed them, and the verse says this destruction lasted 'until this day,' meaning that the effects of that miracle were still evident. The teacher highlights that this was a direct intervention by Hashem to save the Jewish people from their pursuers, showing His ongoing protection and involvement.

ה וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר עַד־בֹּֽאֲכֶ֖ם עַד־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

This verse refers to what Hashem did for the Jewish people in the desert, from the time they left Egypt until they arrived at their current location. The teacher explains that Moshe is reminding the people of all the miracles and acts of kindness that Hashem performed for them throughout their journey in the wilderness, not just the miracles in Egypt or at the Yam Suf, but also the ongoing care and protection they experienced every step of the way until reaching this place.

This verse discusses what Hashem did to Dasan and Aviram, the sons of Eliav, the son of Reuven. The teacher explains that the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their homes, their tents, and all the possessions that were at their feet, in the midst of all Israel. He emphasizes that this was a public miracle, witnessed by everyone, and that it included not just the people themselves but everything connected to them, showing the completeness of the punishment and the lesson it was meant to teach to all of Israel.

The teacher explains this Rashi by quoting: In any place where any one of them would run, the earth would split beneath him and swallow him. These are the words of Rabbi Yehuda. Rabbi Nechemia responds, doesn't it say in the verse 'the earth opened its mouth'—in the singular, not 'mouths' in the plural? So Rabbi Yehuda answers, how then do I interpret 'in the midst of all Israel'? Rabbi Nechemia says that the earth became like a slope, like a funnel, so that wherever a person ran, he would roll down until he came to the place of the split. The teacher clarifies that this means the miracle was not that there were many openings in the earth, but that the land sloped so that anyone trying to escape would end up rolling into the one opening where the earth swallowed them. This explanation resolves the apparent contradiction between the singular 'mouth' and the phrase 'in the midst of all Israel.'

ואת כל היקום אשר ברגליהם - זה ממונו של אדם. שמעמידו על רגליו:

The teacher explains that the phrase 'and all the possessions that are at their feet' refers to a person's belongings and money, which are what support a person and keep him standing on his feet. This is Rashi's interpretation, that the verse is emphasizing not only the people themselves but also their property was swallowed up, showing the totality of the punishment.

ז כִּ֤י עֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ הָֽרֹאֹ֔ת אֶת־כָּל־מַֽעֲשֵׂ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה הַגָּדֹ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֖ר עָשָֽׂה׃

This verse says, 'But your eyes which have seen all the great work that Hashem has done.' The teacher explains that Moshe is telling the people that they themselves are the witnesses to all these miracles and wonders. They saw with their own eyes what Hashem did, and therefore they have a special responsibility to remember and to act accordingly, since they are not relying on hearsay or tradition but on their own direct experience.

(ז) כי עיניכם הרואות - מוסב על מקרא האמור למעלה, (פסוק ב) "כי לא את בניכם אשר לא ידעו" וגו' כי אם עמכם אשר, "עיניכם הרואות" וגו':

The teacher explains this Rashi by saying that the phrase 'for your eyes which have seen' refers back to the earlier verse (verse 2), which said, 'for it is not your children who have not known.' Rather, it is with you, whose eyes have seen all these things. The teacher clarifies that Moshe is emphasizing that the people he is speaking to are the ones who actually witnessed these events, not their children who did not see them. This gives them a greater level of responsibility and connection to the events and the lessons they are meant to learn from them.

The verse says, "Ushmartem Es Kol HaMitzvah Asher Anochi Metzavecha HaYom," which means, "And you shall guard all the commandment that I command you today, so that you will be strong and you will come and inherit the land that you are crossing there to inherit it." The teacher reads and translates the verse, emphasizing that the Torah is telling us to keep all of the mitzvos, and by doing so, we will be strengthened and able to enter and inherit the land of Israel. He does not elaborate further on this verse, but gives the straightforward translation and meaning as it appears in the text.

ט וּלְמַ֨עַן תַּֽאֲרִ֤יכוּ יָמִים֙ עַל־הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר֩ נִשְׁבַּ֨ע יְהוָ֧ה לַאֲבֹֽתֵיכֶ֛ם לָתֵ֥ת לָהֶ֖ם וּלְזַרְעָ֑ם אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ {ס}

The verse says, "Ulemaan Ta'arichu Yamim Al HaAdamah Asher Nishba Hashem LaAvoseichem Laseis Lahem UlZaram Eretz Zavas Chalav UDevash," which means, "And so that you will prolong your days on the land that Hashem swore to your fathers to give to them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey." The teacher translates the verse, explaining that the Torah is promising that by keeping the mitzvos, we will merit long life on the land that Hashem promised to our forefathers, a land described as flowing with milk and honey. There is no further elaboration on this verse in the transcript; the teacher gives the direct translation and meaning.
