Menachem Man Svet (Chassidic Community Organizer)

Menachem Man Svet was an active member of the Chassidic community, noted for his involvement in organizing and participating in farbrengens (Chassidic gatherings), particularly around significant dates such as Yud Tes Kislev. His correspondence with the Lubavitcher Rebbe highlights his role in fostering communal religious life and spiritual inspiration.

Correspondence with the Rebbe

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, wrote to Menachem Man Svet in response to a report about a Yud Tes Kislev celebration. Svet had described a gathering that included a siyum on Mishnayos, singing of the Alter Rebbe’s niggun, and the review of Chassidus. The Rebbe expressed great pleasure at hearing of these activities and encouraged Svet to arrange such gatherings more frequently, especially on Shabbos Mevorchim and other special days (yomei d’pagrah).

The Rebbe emphasized the spiritual value of Chassidic gatherings, noting that when Chassidim come together, they share Torah thoughts, Chassidic teachings, and stories of tzaddikim. These, the Rebbe wrote, refresh the G-dly soul and empower individuals to continue their service—to illuminate their own bodies, animal souls, and their unique portion in the world.

Drawing a parallel to the mitzvah of Chanukah, the Rebbe explained that just as one increases light each night of Chanukah, so too every Jew has the power to increase light in the darkness of exile, in accordance with the principle of ma'alin bakodesh (ascending in holiness).

Support and Encouragement

As a gesture of encouragement and participation, the Rebbe symbolically enclosed five dollars to be used for refreshments and spirits at future gatherings. He also asked Svet to convey his regards to all participants and blessed them with proper health. The tone of the letter is warm, supportive, and empowering, reflecting the Rebbe’s deep appreciation for Svet’s efforts in strengthening communal Chassidic life.
