This letter was written to the Alter Rebbe’s mechutan—his relative by marriage, the renowned and holy Rav, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev. The occasion for the letter was to offer comfort after the passing of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak’s son, the Chassid Rabbi Meir, of blessed memory.

The Alter Rebbe addresses Rabbi Levi Yitzchak with many honorifics, calling him a godly and holy man, and refers to his position as the Rav and Av Beis Din of the esteemed community of Berditchev. The letter’s purpose is to console him in his time of loss, following the passing of his son, who was himself a distinguished Chassid and Torah scholar.

"למה נסמכה פ' מרים לפ' פרה? - לומר לך: מה פרה מכפרת וכו'".

The letter opens with the teaching: למה נסמכה פ' מרים לפ' פרה — Why is the section about Miriam’s passing placed next to the section about the פרה — the red heifer? The Gemara explains that this juxtaposition is to teach us: just as the פרה — the red heifer—brings atonement, so too does the passing of the righteous bring atonement.

In other words, the Torah places the story of Miriam’s death right next to the laws of the red heifer to show that the death of a tzaddik—a righteous person—serves as a source of atonement for the generation, just as the red heifer atones for impurity.

However, this raises a question: Why is Miriam’s passing specifically juxtaposed with the פרה אדומה — the red heifer—which is unique among offerings in that it is performed חוץ לשלש מחנות — outside all three camps of Israel? The Torah refers to it as a חטאת — a sin-offering, but it is not brought in the usual place for a korban chatas, which is inside the sanctuary, on the altar, as a true act of atonement.

Why, then, does the Torah not place Miriam’s passing next to the regular korban chatas—the sin-offering that is brought inside, on the altar, which is the classic example of a sacrifice that brings atonement? Instead, it is placed next to the red heifer, which is brought outside, and is only called a chatas by the Torah, but is not a typical inner offering.

To understand this, the Alter Rebbe draws on the teachings of the Zohar and the Arizal about the inner meaning of korbanos—sacrifices—brought on the altar. The secret of these offerings is that they represent the elevation of מ"נ — mayin nukvin, the feminine waters, which refers to the spiritual elevation of the animal soul within a person.

This animal soul is rooted in נוגה — klipas noga, the intermediate spiritual realm that can be elevated to holiness. The process of bringing a sacrifice is an act of raising up this animal soul to its root and source, which are the four chayos—the four living creatures described in the vision of the Divine Chariot: the face of the ox, the face of the eagle, and so on.

Through this elevation, there is a drawing down and descent of מ"ד — mayin duchrin, the masculine waters, from the level of אדם שעל הכסא — the Man upon the Throne. This refers to the spiritual level called מלכא — the King, and ז"א — Zeir Anpin, the emotional attributes of Atzilus.

In other words, the regular korbanos bring about a spiritual elevation from below to above, and in response, a flow of divine energy is drawn down from the higher spiritual realms—specifically from Zeir Anpin and Malchus—into the world.

But when it comes to the burning of the פרה אדומה — the red heifer, the process is different. The Torah describes how cedar wood, hyssop, and other elements are thrown into the fire, and then מים חיים — living water—is added to the ashes. This mixture is called in the Mishnah קידוש מי חטאת — the sanctification of the waters of purification.

This process is distinct from the regular sacrifices, and the terminology used in the Mishnah highlights its unique status as a means of spiritual purification.

This purification is associated with the level of קדש העליון — the supernal holiness, which is called in the Zohar טלא דבדולחא — the dew of bedolach. The Zohar explains that this refers to the level of חכמה עילאה — Supernal Wisdom, and מוחא סתימאה דא"א — the concealed mind of Arich Anpin (the innermost aspect of Divine Will).

This is a much higher spiritual level than what is accessed through the regular sacrifices. The red heifer draws from the highest realms, from the hidden intellect of the Divine, and this is why its purification is so powerful—it can even transform the greatest impurity, such as the impurity of death, into purity. This is the unique power of the Parah Adumah and, by extension, the passing of a tzaddik, which brings atonement and transformation on the deepest level.

The Zohar states in many places the phrase בחכמה אתברירו — "with wisdom they are refined." This means that the process of refinement, of elevating and purifying the lower worlds, is accomplished through the power of Chochmah Ila'ah—the supernal wisdom.

This is the idea of ואתהפכא חשוכא לנהורא — transforming darkness into light. In other words, it is not just about removing negativity, but actually turning darkness itself into light. This is the hallmark of the world of Tikkun—the world of rectification and repair, which is able to sort out and fix what was broken.

How does this happen? It is through the level called מוחא סתימאה דא"א — the "hidden mind" of Arich Anpin, the innermost aspect of Divine will and wisdom. This level is able to repair the damage that came from the world of Tohu—the world of chaos—and from the shattering of the vessels, when the Divine light was too intense for the vessels to contain and they "fell" into the lower worlds of Beriah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah.

This is a well-known concept in Chassidus: the world of Tikkun, through the power of supernal wisdom, is able to elevate and rectify even the lowest fallen sparks from the world of Tohu. That is the unique power of Chochmah Ila'ah—it can transform even the deepest darkness into light.

This is why the Parah Adumah—the red heifer—has the power to purify even the impurity of death, טומאת המת. Death is called אבי אבות הטומאה — the "father of fathers" of impurity, the most intense and fundamental source of tumah.

In fact, the impurity of death is even lower than נוגה — the realm of Klipas Noga, which is a mixture of good and bad and can be elevated through ordinary korbanos. But death is a level of impurity that is "lower than low," beneath even Noga, and cannot be purified by regular means.

Yet, through the unique power of the Parah Adumah, which draws from the highest levels of holiness—Chochmah Ila'ah and Mocha Stimaa d'Arich Anpin—even this deepest impurity can be purified. This is the extraordinary strength of the Parah Adumah, and by extension, the power of the passing of tzaddikim, which brings atonement and purification even to the lowest places.
