Shalom u'Vrachah!

Haraha"g vavac"h iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z rav pe'alim Simchah HaKohen Kuk Netanyah

Shalom u'Vrachah! I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 2nd of Elul with its enclosure, in which you write about the difficulties in instilling the awareness of our Sages' statement: "Bereishit – for the sake of Torah which is called 'beginning', etc., and for the sake of Israel who are called 'beginning'," and you ask my opinion on this.

Indeed, the words of our Sages do not require proofs or evidence, especially regarding such a fundamental matter. Certainly, they—our Sages—anticipated the world's resistance to accepting such a statement, especially based on the verse "for you are the fewest of all peoples," and that Israel are downtrodden and afflicted, etc. Nevertheless, they publicized this statement decisively—even to the extent that Rashi in his commentary on Torah quoted it. Rashi's approach is to explain the plain meaning of Scripture as he states in several places: "I have come only to explain the plain meaning." From this it is understood that even when Rashi brings a drash or midrash, it is also connected and necessary for the simple meaning—just not entirely straightforward. Since at the very beginning of his commentary on Torah he quotes our Sages' statement, it means that even a five-year-old learning Chumash must be informed about this matter; thus it is clear that it can also be explained according to his understanding.

We have seen throughout generations of our people Bnei Yisrael in their exile—both literal exile and spiritual exile—that all efforts to conceal the truth of our Torah, Torat Emet (the Torah of Truth), so that Torah would be more accepted by certain circles or fit someone's psychological approach—as is commonly termed "the apologetic method"—not only failed to bring lasting benefit but actually caused harm, whether immediately or after some time. Additionally, any compromise with truth is a deviation from truth—in other words: it is contrary to truth; for compromise and truth are opposites.

I do not know how far your influence reaches—even though regarding this too applies the wise saying: "Accept the truth from whoever says it," all the more so when it comes from a rabbi who is a teacher in Israel and involved in education. But if for any reason it is impossible for this principle to be accepted as stated, at least one should strive to highlight that Jewish history stands above nature's order and is marked by Divine providence, especially by explaining world events in relation to our people's experiences—their lives and adventures.

May it be G‑d's will that your efforts succeed in utilizing your influence directly and indirectly to instill pure awe of Hashem—which is united with love of Hashem—in daily life for all those you can affect. The guiding principle here should be as stated: "In all your ways know Him," in every way and manner—especially regarding textbooks and education in general.

With respect and blessings for a good inscription and sealing for a good and sweet year, with good tidings in all mentioned above. May the merit of many assist you.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that unwavering commitment to Torah truth inspires others more than compromise ever could. Highlighting Jewish uniqueness and Divine providence helps instill faith even amidst resistance or challenges.
