הנני לאשר קבלת מכתבו מיום ל' בתשרי, שהגיעני באיחור.
נעם לי במאד לקרוא בו דעתו בנוגע לדת ישראל אשר היא "הגורם הבלעדי המלכד את עם ישראל בכל פזוריו". ומפרש אני את הבטוי "בכל פזוריו" שזה כולל גם את אחינו בני ישראל אשר בארץ ישראל, וכההמשך במכתבו אשר בדת ישראל "טמון כוחו המוסרי של עם ישראל לעמוד על נפשו ולהגן על הארץ".
ובודאי ידוע למר אשר דת ישראל שתי נקודות מיוחדות ומקושרות בה:
הא' – שהיא מקפת את חיי האדם מרגע הראשון להוולדו ועד רגעו האחרון עלי אדמות,
ובלשון הכתוב
: "בכל דרכיך דעהו (את ה')", וכפירוש
חכמינו
ז"ל בזה, שהכוונה גם באכילתו ובשתיתו ובמשא ומתן שלו וכולי.
ועוד זאת – שהיא דת מעשיית,
ובנוסח המשנה
: המעשה הוא העיקר. שלכן, כשמתבוננים בחמשה חומשי התורה וכן בששה סדרי משנה וכו' רואים אנו שרובם ככולם הוראות מעשיות, ובנוגע לדיעות – ובפרט דיעות אבסטרקטיות – מעט מזעיר לפי ערך בכמות ובקיצור וברמז, אף כי רב האיכות הוא ומועט המחזיק את המרובה.
ובהתאם להקדמה האמורה, תקותי חזקה שרגש שלו בנוגע לדת מתורגם למעשה בפועל בחיי יום-יום, וזכות כפולה ומכופלת למר בזה שהרי בודאי משמש דוגמא לכמה וכמה, ובפרט אשר גם תפקידו כמפקד חטיבה בצה"ל מוסיף עוצם בזה, שהרי מטבע בני אדם שהוא מושפע במיוחד מהעומד על גביו, ומושפע ממנו לא רק בשטח זה שהוא מפקד שלו, אלא גם מהנהגתו בשאר עניניו ובחייו הפרטיים.
ועוד נקודה בדבר, שהרי מטבע איש צבאי, ובפרט מפקד

, להיות רגיל בקבלת עול במילוי פקודה מבלי לשאול טעם והסברה, ואפילו באם יש אצלו איזו קושי' על הפקודה. ובסגנון המסורתי –
הקדמת
נעשה לנשמע. זאת אומרת, שהנהגתו של מר וכל בני ביתו, מיוסדת על דת ישראל במעשה בפועל, נכפלת פי כמה על ידי רבים שילכו אחריו בזה. ולכן אפילו אם קשור הדבר ביגיעה והשתדלות, בודאי שכדאיות הן כיון שמזכה את הרבים בזה.
ובודאי לדכוותי' דמר אין צורך להדגיש שאין להתרשם מקושיים ועיכובים באם אפילו פוגשים בהם. ורק להוסיף נקודה על פי
תורת הבעל שם טוב
, שמכל דבר יש ללמוד הוראה בעבודת האדם לבוראו וקונו: כי הנה כל ענין הצנחנות מיוסד על זה שמנצלים את כוח המעצור של האויר להאיט הירידה בצנחנות, ואדרבה מנצלים אותו להיות כוח מסייע שתהי' הצנחנות בהצלחה. והנמשל מובן.
כנהוג בבקשת ברכה, אזכירו ואת בני ביתו שיחיו על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר.
ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בכל האמור, ובתוכן מכתבו בכלל, ויצליח בתפקידו בהגנה על עם ישראל ועל ארץ ישראל,

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter dated the 30th of Tishrei, which reached me with some delay. I was very pleased to read your opinion regarding the Jewish religion, which is the sole factor uniting the Jewish people in all their dispersions.
I interpret the phrase "in all their dispersions" as including our fellow Jews in Eretz Yisrael as well. As you continued in your letter: within Judaism lies the moral strength of the Jewish people to stand up for themselves and defend the land.
Certainly you know that Judaism has two special and interconnected points: First—it encompasses a person's life from his very first moment until his last on earth; as it says: b'chol derachecha da'eihu ("In all your ways know Him"), and as our Sages explain, this includes even one's eating, drinking, business dealings, etc. Secondly—it is a practical religion; as stated in the Mishnah: "The deed is what matters most." Thus, when we look at the Five Books of Torah and the Six Orders of Mishnah etc., we see that most are practical instructions; regarding opinions—especially abstract ones—there are very few by comparison and they are brief or hinted at. Yet their quality is great—little containing much.
According to this introduction, I strongly hope that your feeling regarding Judaism translates into actual practice in daily life. You have double merit in this since you certainly serve as an example for many others—especially since your role as a brigade commander in Tzahal adds even more strength to this influence. Human nature is such that one is especially influenced by his superior—not only in areas where he commands but also by his conduct in other matters and private life.
Another point: It is natural for a military man—especially a commander—to be accustomed to accepting authority when fulfilling orders without asking for reasons or explanations, even if he has some difficulty with the order. In traditional language—na'aseh kodem l'nishma ("We will do before we understand"). This means that your conduct and that of your household based on practical observance of Judaism is multiplied many times over by those who follow you. Therefore, even if it requires effort and striving, it is certainly worthwhile since you bring merit to many through this.
Certainly for someone like yourself there is no need to emphasize not being affected by difficulties or obstacles even if encountered.
Let me add a point based on the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov: From everything one can learn a lesson in serving one's Creator. The whole concept of parachuting relies on using air resistance to slow descent; indeed it becomes an assisting force so that parachuting succeeds. The analogy is clear.
As customary when requesting blessing—I will mention you and your family at the resting place of my father-in-law the Rebbe. May it be G‑d's will that you share good news regarding all mentioned above and about your letter in general; may you succeed in your role defending Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael—as it says: v'ra'u kol amei ha'aretz ki shem Hashem nikra alecha v'yare'u mimeka ("And all peoples of the earth will see that G‑d's Name is called upon you and they will fear you").
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Judaism guides every aspect of life through action rather than abstract thought. Leaders have amplified influence through their example; even challenges can become aids when approached with faith and commitment.
