B"H, Fifteenth of Av, 5729.

Brooklyn, NY.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Although I do not know you personally, I take the liberty to write to you based on my acquaintance with your father and mother during their recent visit to New York, especially since I was told you are about to join the IDF. First of all, I wish you that you enter in peace and return in peace, and that your service in the IDF will also be successful and peaceful.

May it be G‑d's will that these days serve as preparation for a period of such peace that, as our Sages say, even a sword of peace will not pass through the land and everyone will be able to dedicate all their time, strength, and energy to matters of peace. May the prophecy be fulfilled: "And they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war anymore" (Yeshayahu 2:4).

Since I have already taken the liberty to write to you, allow me to add another point related to what was said: You have surely heard about my call and request before the Six-Day War that every Jew should strengthen and beautify their observance of the mitzvah of tefillin—how much more so those who merit living in Eretz Yisrael, the Holy Land, especially those who defend the land and its inhabitants in the IDF generally and border guards specifically. I emphasized that although mitzvos must be fulfilled because they are commandments from the Creator—the Creator of man and of the world—nevertheless some mitzvos have special qualities. The unique quality of tefillin is that it instills fear and weakens the strength of Israel's enemies so they do not dare provoke us into war. As it is written: "And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of Hashem is called upon you" (and our Sages explain this refers to tefillin) "and they shall fear you." Furthermore, even when matters deteriorate into actual war, then too comes the mitzvah of tefillin placed on arm and head which brings absolute victory for Israel's armies—as our Sages expound on "and he will tear off arm as well as head."

There are some who ask: what possible connection can there be between putting on tefillin once each weekday morning and events at the front throughout day and night? Since this cannot be explained rationally—they do not see why or for what reason they should accept this mitzvah upon themselves. And other similar questions.

The answer comes from military life itself: The entire structure of army life is based on accepting authority and fulfilling orders from one's platoon commander—who himself accepts authority from his superior—and so on up to the chief commander. Only after fulfilling an order does a soldier use his free time to investigate or try to understand it; even if he cannot comprehend it fully he relies on his commander up to the chief commander.

Moreover—and this is crucial—in matters involving danger or saving lives people do many things which are only possibly effective or involve much effort or exertion—how much more so when it is a matter involving many lives rather than just one.

In our case—for those who believe in our Torah of Life—there is no doubt at all but absolute certainty that fulfilling tefillin protects from danger—as mentioned: danger for many people. On the other hand, what needs to be invested is only a few moments with minimal effort.

Additionally regarding you personally—for several reasons your conduct in this matter will certainly influence others positively; meaning even if you do this out of simple acceptance every day your action will multiply among your friends who will follow your example—the merit of many depends on you.

Certainly someone may ask you (or about you) various questions—but it is precisely a trait of today's youth not to be deterred by difficulties or even by mockery from their environment; on the contrary—they see it as a challenge which motivates them all the more to act openly before all.

In summary: My faith and clear opinion is that now you have been given an extraordinary opportunity to increase security for Am Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael and strengthen Tzahal both through your personal conduct as well as by spreading this matter—tefillin observance—among your fellow soldiers; it does not matter if some have never performed this mitzvah until now. In a certain sense enlisting in the army changes one's entire way of life in fundamental ways.

I repeat my blessing that Hashem Yisbarach Shomer Yisrael will guard you wherever you may be; at an appropriate time may He return you healthy and whole in body and soul to your home—and again let me stress that what I wrote above stems from my firm belief that this increases security for Am Yisrael generally, Tzahal specifically, and for you personally. According to our Torah of Life—I am obligated at least briefly to write this since given its importance these few lines are too short for such a great matter.

Blessings for success and good news in all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that observing tefillin has unique spiritual power protecting both individuals and Israel’s army. By strengthening one’s own practice—and inspiring others—a soldier can increase security for all Jews while demonstrating steadfastness despite challenges or questions from others.
