שנכנסים אנו לחודש אלול,
חודש
הרחמים, אשר ענינו מבואר במשל הידוע של כ"ק רבינו הזקן בעל התניא והשלחן ערוך (לקו"ת, פ' ראה, דף לב):
משל למלך שקודם בואו לעיר יוצאין אנשי העיר לקראתו ומקבלין פניו בשדה ואז רשאין כל מי שרוצה להקביל פניו והוא מקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם כו'.
וזהו ענין חודש אלול, שאז הוא בבחינת "מלך בשדה", זמן התגלות י"ג מדות הרחמים.

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter, and may Hashem Yisbarach fulfill the wishes of your heart for good in all matters you wrote about.
Especially as we are entering the month of Elul, the month of mercy, whose theme is explained in the well-known parable from our teacher Rabbeinu HaZaken, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch (Likkutei Torah, Parshas Re'eh, p. 32): A parable of a king who, before entering the city, the people of the city go out to greet him and receive him in the field. There everyone who wishes may approach him, and he receives them all with a pleasant countenance and shows a smiling face to everyone, etc.
This is the concept of the month of Elul: it is like a king in the field—a time when the thirteen attributes of mercy are revealed.
May it be His will that each one of us utilize these auspicious days to draw closer to our Father our King by increasing in Torah and mitzvah observance with extra beauty. May Hashem Yisbarach accept with a pleasant and smiling countenance the prayers and requests of each one of us among all Israel for good and for blessing.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Elul is a time when Divine mercy is especially accessible—like a king greeting his people in an open field. We should use this opportunity to strengthen our connection to G‑d through Torah and mitzvos.
