Leaving One's Community for Chinuch Work and the Halachic Implications

The Rebbe writes that one who can strengthen Torah, mitzvos, and especially education in their own community must not abandon it for similar work elsewhere. Doing so is akin to desertion in a life-and-death struggle, as saving one's own community takes precedence.

Shalom u'Vrachah! [Shevat 5727]

Regarding your letter about transferring to another place for holy work—my position is already stated and well-known (based on the ruling of great Torah authorities): Anyone who is able to have an impact in tzt"z with fear of Heaven, especially in the field of education, and leaves behind "the poor of his city" and country (even for such a matter as above)—this is considered desertion and abandoning the front lines, a front in the war against assimilation, which is truly a matter of saving lives. And when it comes to saving lives, even in cases of doubt or remote doubt, one desecrates Yom Kippur and Shabbos, etc., all the more so when it is almost certain (based on past experience) that he will save lives. This should be clear.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that one must prioritize strengthening Torah and education within their own community over similar opportunities elsewhere. Abandoning one's local responsibilities is likened to desertion in a critical battle for Jewish continuity.
