... נוהגין הנערים העניים לסבב על הפתחים כו'...
מגן אברהם ריש הל' חנוכה - הועתק בדברי נחמי' - השלמה לשו"ע אדה"ז סו"ס תר"ע. - אבל עדיין צ"ע בזה. כי לא ראיתי כל רמז לזה במנהגי חנוכה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר. ואף שאין לא ראינו ראי', ובפרט בצדקה שמתן בסתר יפה בה - הרי, לכאורה מילתא הוא מה ש(לבד ממשנ"ת בד"ה בכ"ה בכסלו - בתו"א וביאוריו בשערי אורה ואוה"ת - דמעשה הצדקה נק' כובע ישועה ומס"נ דחנוכה המשיכה מתנה מרובה המשכת כובע ישועה להיות כו') לא אשתמיט להזכיר בשום מאמר חסידות (שראיתי ע"ע) או שיחה ומכ' רבותינו ע"ד צדקה במיוחד בחנוכה (אף שכו"כ עניני חנוכה נזכרו ונתבארו בהם ובפרטיות). ובפרט שנמצא הוא בכמה מס' פולין וכו'. ומי שימצא עד"ז בתורת נשיאינו ודאי יודיעני ות"ח מראש מקול"ע. - בסי' מהרי"ד (ואולי קטע זה מהצ"צ) מבאר הנ"ל שבחנוכה חולקין "מעות לעניים שמחזרין על הפתחים, שהוא על פתח הבית מבחוץ שהוא בחי' בכל מאדך בכל ממונך".

...It is customary for poor youths to go around to the doors, etc... Magen Avraham at the beginning of the laws of Chanukah—this is quoted in Divrei Nechemiah—an addition to Shulchan Aruch Admur at the end of section 670. But this still requires clarification. For I have not seen any hint of this in the Chanukah customs of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe. And even though 'we have not seen' is not a proof, especially regarding charity where giving in secret is praiseworthy—in any case, it would seem significant that (aside from what is explained in Maamarim on the 25th of Kislev—in Torah Or and its commentaries in Shaarei Orah and Ohr HaTorah—that the act of tzedakah is called a 'helmet of salvation,' and that the self-sacrifice of Chanukah draws down an abundant gift, drawing down a helmet of salvation, etc.) it was never omitted or mentioned in any Maamar Chassidus (that I have seen so far) or talk or letter from our Rebbeim specifically about tzedakah on Chanukah (even though many aspects of Chanukah are mentioned and explained there in detail). In Siman Maharid (and perhaps this passage is from tzt"z), it explains that on Chanukah they distribute 'coins to poor people who go around to the doors, which is at the entrance to the house from outside, which corresponds to "with all your might," i.e., with all your wealth.' This was printed in Shaarei Halacha U'Minhag vol. II p. 265.
