Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from 15/2 in which you write about your family, your lineage, and that you are learning in a chassidic yeshiva, and that the tzelem Elokim (Divine image) is visible on your face [unlike those who are ashamed of it and try various ways to remove or conceal their tzelem Elokim], and you ask my opinion regarding continuing your studies, especially since some family members object to this.

It is understood that all these objections come from the "old and foolish king," the yetzer hara (evil inclination), who fights against the Holy One Blessed Be He, His Torah and mitzvos, and wants to make a Jew so that the animal soul overpowers the G‑dly soul. He strengthens the animal soul (just like those who object) until he tries to convince him that this is how a person should be. This was also his conduct right after Matan Torah, when the yetzer hara incited them to make a golden calf and shout "Eleh Elohecha Yisrael" (These are your gods, Israel), G‑d forbid; his students exist even in this generation.

From what was said above it is clear how you should conduct yourself going forward—just as you have until now—and not like your relatives whom you mentioned. Rather, conduct yourself according to the instructions of our Torah of life and fulfill its mitzvos about which it is written "v'chai bahem" (and you shall live by them), for this is the true path by which a Jew can be happy—not just for a few moments or with deceptive happiness but truly both materially and spiritually.

With blessing for good news in all of the above in the name of the Rebbe shlita,

Mazkir

P.S. To make it easier regarding all of the above—especially concerning tzelem Elokim—it is worthwhile every day before davening to give a few cents to tzedakah, and after davening also on Shabbos and Yom Tov to be careful to say the daily portion of Tehillim as divided among the days of the month.

Summary

The Rebbe encourages steadfastness in Torah study despite opposition from others, explaining such resistance comes from negative spiritual forces. He stresses preserving one's Divine image through mitzvos, daily charity before prayer, and reciting Tehillim for spiritual strength.
