Shalom u'Vrachah!
On the yahrzeit of Admor HaZaken, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, Haraha"ch iy"a nu"n Rav Pe'alim Ba'al Middos ben Neshek etc. Mohari"tz shlita achadesh"t.
I acknowledge receipt today: Sefer Etz Chaim in three volumes, Mevo Sha'arim and Sha'ar HaHakdamot, which Divine Providence has enabled you to publish successfully, in accordance with the great necessity and urgency to reveal this wisdom. As is well known from the words of the living Arizal, brought and explained in Iggeres HaKodesh by our Rebbe Admor HaZaken (the one whose yahrzeit it is), and in Kuntres Etz HaChaim by Admor (Maharashab) n"a, father of Admor M"HM Admor. Many thanks for sending it; surely also future volumes from the publisher via your honor will be sent here as well—many thanks in advance.
Even though I try to restrain myself, I cannot help but point out the great wonder and surprise that there is no mention at all in the publisher's notes of the sefarim of our Rebbeim Nesi'ei Toras Chabad—even though it is certainly known that they explained many letters of the Arizal [at least some are referenced—and their place is also clear from the index to Torah Ohr and Likkutei Torah by our Rebbe Admor HaZaken; Sefer Shaarei Orah by his son and successor Admor HaEmtza'i; Sefer HaMitzvos by his grandson and successor/father-in-law Admor tzt"z]. If our Sages explained at length the concept of "ears for a basket," how much more so when it comes to explanations regarding content. All the more so regarding Kabbalistic works—and according to the Baal Shem Tov's instruction for special care in studying these matters (see Shoresh Mitzvas HaTefillah end ch. 2 by Admor tzt"z).
It is understood that my intention is not to complain about what was done previously—certainly not as a grievance—but only where it concerns future matters, since—in your introduction you note that more writings of the Arizal are being prepared for print.
I must further add—and continuing with "ears for a basket"—that it is very proper to fill out references and sources for additional writings of the Arizal and his accepted commentators as much as possible. And first and foremost—to include those noted in glosses and commentaries on Etz Chaim printed Warsaw 5651 (1891), likewise those on Arizal's writings printed in Jerusalem with glosses by RMM Halperin etc.; certainly, the importance of comparing topics across Arizal's writings from place to place is understood and obvious.
References and sources for Arizal's writings (based on our Sages' statement "words of Torah...and wealthy elsewhere") are certainly only beneficial (unlike explanations given independently).
Certainly—as per my previous letters—your honor also endeavors to spread the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov in every possible way: in writing, print, or orally. May it be G‑d's will that you see good fruit from this labor; after all, these teachings—of the Baal Shem Tov, his students and their students—are true toil in Torah which through awe and love ascends through all heavens and stands before Hashem, as brought in Sefer Tanya Kadisha (ch. 40 and there Kuntres Acharon at its beginning).
Summary
The Rebbe stresses both gratitude for publishing important Kabbalistic texts and urges careful citation of Chabad sources within such works. He highlights how referencing earlier explanations enriches understanding and encourages ongoing efforts to spread chassidic teachings widely.
