Haraha"g vavac"h iy"a nu"n rav pe'alim etc. Shimon Yisrael

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Based on what I recall from our previous meeting, and now having received the Arizal Siddur from R. Sh. of Rashkov—which in its introduction states that you were involved in its publication—I feel obligated to express my strong hope, based on the teaching of our Sages that one mitzvah leads to another mitzvah, that this activity in spreading the wellsprings—specifically the wellsprings of the wisdom of truth through print (meaning it reaches even further)—will continue. My intention is regarding the study of this wisdom: the wisdom of Kabbalah, whose inner dimension in our generation has been revealed through the teachings of Chassidus—and all the more so regarding intentions in prayer and related matters which are not accessible to every mind and heart. For these require both intellect and emotion; moreover, it is clear that for prayer intentions one must study these topics first—whereas with Kabbalah itself one can learn its inner dimension (Chassidus) and then pray with this knowledge (see Responsa HaRivash sec. 157).

If regarding mitzvah observance there must first be study leading to action, how much more so with prayer intentions which require great care as explained elsewhere. It is understood that merely studying Kabbalah is insufficient; one must also learn Chassidus which explains and abstracts Kabbalistic concepts from their material form. Without this abstraction—as Admor HaTzemach Tzedek writes in the name of the Baal Shem Tov—it is forbidden to study Kabbalistic texts because without knowing how to abstract their concepts from physicality, one's understanding becomes overly materialized through such study. Even though the words of the Arizal are true and faithful—for example "when they read 'Shechinah,' they mean Malchut," etc.—see Shoresh Mitzvat HaTefillah by tzt"z at end of ch. 2 and there ch. 8.

Since you have influence over many people, certainly the merit of the community depends on you—to spread the study of Chassidus as taught by Chanukah: increasing light—Torah Or (Torah as light) and Maor ShebaTorah (the illuminating aspect within Torah).

As a token of appreciation upon receiving this Siddur I noted several points—at least briefly—and since you were involved in preparing it for print I am enclosing them here.

With honor and blessing,
M. Schneersohn

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that publishing and studying Kabbalah requires learning Chassidus to properly understand its depth. He urges using one's influence to spread these teachings widely—especially during Chanukah when we increase light—so their spiritual impact reaches even further.
