Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the fifth night of Chanukah, in which you ask for a concrete explanation of what unity is: In general, the work of our generation—despite the demand to study deep concepts in Torah in general and Chassidus in particular—is primarily to work on oneself and to influence one's surroundings in very simple matters and in daily life.
Regarding the people... In general, the intention of unity is the opposite of discord, and it involves striving to love another even when it comes at some personal cost. Especially when it does not involve interfering with another's affairs—and as mentioned, I also mean simple matters from which one must begin before rising higher and higher.
As someone who finds herself among... you see the frictions that occur between one person and another regarding various matters, etc. I do not wish to elaborate on a painful topic (and this expression is only to convey my feelings about it). Of course—and no one will suspect me of this—I do not wish to seek faults in Jews in general or... specifically or among the people... in particular.
But reflecting on your collective situation... one sees the success granted from Above—that help comes from unexpected sources and in ways that were not anticipated. Yet seeing how things are actually going and seeking out reasons for this does not do any good; on the contrary! When a patient wants to heal, it is not helpful to fool oneself or imagine things are fine—especially when the illness is obvious—by pretending not to see it. As is well known: revealing a condition is already a large part of healing for the patient.
I write all this as general statements without emphasizing details of specific incidents because it is not my place to write about one person regarding another in negative matters unless it is absolutely necessary for their benefit—and in this case it certainly is not necessary. Those present locally know exactly what the situation is there; what is lacking is only sufficient willpower and energy to correct things. If that were present, then within a short time the situation among... and its people and institutions would be transformed into something praiseworthy and beautiful.
May Hashem help you [and] your husband with abundant livelihood and peace of mind. I hope that both you and others who will see this letter will accept my words not as rebuke or complaint but as repeated encouragement directed at those who can improve the situation... This reflects my true perspective on how things really are. May Hashem grant you success so that you can report good news regarding all the above-mentioned matters and from your positive activities in daily life...
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true unity requires honest self-reflection, loving others even when difficult, and practical action for communal improvement—beginning with simple steps in daily life rather than focusing on others' faults or seeking complex solutions.
