Avrech's Doubts About Yeshiva and the Yetzer Hara's Tactics

A young Avrech expresses dissatisfaction with aspects of his yeshiva and considers transferring. The Rebbe explains that such doubts often stem from the yetzer hara, who uses clever tactics to disrupt Torah study and prayer, and advises him to remain steadfast in his current yeshiva.

The Avrech... may he live.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter in which you write that you are dissatisfied with certain details in the yeshiva's arrangements, and in your opinion these details disturb your diligence in learning as is proper, as well as regarding prayer. Therefore, you have an idea about traveling to the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva in Eretz HaKodesh, and you ask my opinion on this.

It is unnecessary to elaborate on what is well-known and obvious: that matters which interfere with Torah, avodah (service), or acts of kindness stem from the "leaven in the dough," meaning the yetzer hara (evil inclination) who confuses a person in many ways. Even though it is called a fool, when it comes to its work it is a skilled craftsman. As is known from the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal (may his memory be a blessing for life in the World to Come), that the yetzer hara comes to each person with arguments tailored to that individual's nature—sometimes even disguising itself as a Torah scholar or one who fears Heaven. Therefore, everyone must thoroughly examine any thoughts about changing one's service of Hashem and determine who is making these arguments—whether from the right or left side.

You surely know the story about the righteous one from Chernobyl, printed in the Pesach 5703 talk; one test is whether a change will cause neglect of Torah and avodah or not.

In your case—since you are in a yeshiva founded by righteous leaders of the generation and conducted in their spirit (Torah study with fear of Heaven)—it is likely, even without knowing all details, that studying there brings great benefit. Therefore it is also understood that the yetzer hara will oppose this through various schemes to distract you from behaving according to all requirements of the yeshiva.

It is also clear that if the yetzer hara were to reveal its true intent—that it does not want you to be diligent in studying revealed Torah and Chassidus—you would certainly not listen. So it comes cunningly: claiming that actually the yeshiva itself disturbs your diligence in Torah and service of Hashem as it should be. Its hope is that these arguments will be accepted so you will be distracted from Torah and prayer.

Even if it promises that if you go to another yeshiva you will not be disturbed and can focus on Torah study and improve your prayers—the yetzer hara assures itself that once you listen at first (as all beginnings are difficult), afterwards it will find further ways to draw you into its net.

A person has free choice with two paths before him—as Scripture says: "See I have set before you life and good..." But together with this comes special assistance so one can choose good—as Scripture says: "And you shall choose life."

Certainly also in your case—even though the yetzer hara is extremely cunning—you have been given strength to nullify all its arguments and exert yourself wholeheartedly by completely ignoring distracting thoughts such as blaming your environment or others for neglecting Torah or prayer instead of yourself.

It is also understood that among your friends at yeshiva there are things needing improvement—for only Hashem, Creator of the world, is absolutely perfect—but advice for this is to influence your friends positively rather than being influenced by them. This itself helps correct one's own shortcomings through one's friends—as explained regarding "all Israel are guarantors for each other," forming a complete stature where each has something unique; through Ahavas Yisrael (love for fellow Jews), everyone completes each other.

The conclusion from all this: dismiss distracting thoughts about Torah and avodah; immerse yourself in studying revealed Torah and Chassidus and prayer according to yeshiva order and requirements. Then will be fulfilled what our Sages promised: "If you labor—you will find."

You do not mention whether regarding your friend... may he live... he too is disturbed by these arguments concerning his own matters; if so—the above answer applies equally to him.

With blessings for success in Torah study with fear of Heaven.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that doubts about one's spiritual environment often originate from the yetzer hara's cunning strategies. Instead of seeking external changes, one should focus on self-improvement within their current setting while helping others grow as well.
