To the esteemed worshippers and gabbaim of the Beit Midrash Nusach HaAri Zal in Montreal — may Hashem be upon them for life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I recently received your letter from the 29th of Shevat, and I was pleased that the words of inspiration brought to you by Haraha"ch vavac"h iy"a nu"n etc. More... found a warm resonance with you, as I had no doubt would be the case. For as our Sages say: Ani Yeshena V'Libi Er ("I am asleep but my heart is awake") — I am asleep in exile but my heart is awake to Torah and mitzvos.
I also hope — and this is the main thing — that this inspiration will be translated into practical deeds in all three areas that my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, so often emphasized: Ahavas Hashem (love of G‑d), Ahavas HaTorah (love of Torah), and Ahavas Yisrael (love of Israel).
Now, as we stand in the days of Pesach, you are surely aware of what our Sages tell us: when leaving Egypt there had to be no less than six hundred thousand Jews present; if even one had been missing, it would have hindered all the others. The lesson for us in these words is — especially during Pesach — that we must all remember and devote our greatest efforts to bringing every single Jew closer to Torah and Judaism: man or woman, young or old. This concerns not only those whom we are drawing close but also all of us ourselves.
This is also one of the hints at the beginning of Pesach: before we begin celebrating the Sedarim, we proclaim and announce: Kol Dichfin Yeisei V'Yeichol Kol Ditzrich Yeisei V'Yifsach ("Let all who are hungry come and eat; let all who need come and celebrate Pesach"). This means both literally — help in material needs — and spiritually. Only afterward can we say: Hashata Hacha L'Shana Haba'a B'Ara D'Yisrael Hashata Avdin L'Shana Haba'a Bnei Chorin ("This year [we are] here; next year in Eretz Yisrael. This year [we are] slaves; next year free people").
I wish you all and your families a kosher and joyous Pesach and hope to hear good news from you in all matters. Very soon may we merit that our request which we say and pray for — L'Shana Haba'a B'Ara D'Yisrael Bnei Chorin ("Next year in Eretz Yisrael as free people") — will be fulfilled through Moshiach Tzidkeinu speedily in our days.
With blessings for a kosher and happy festival.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true inspiration must lead to practical action—especially in loving G‑d, Torah, and fellow Jews—and urges everyone to help bring every Jew closer during Pesach so that together we merit redemption.
