To all participants in the gathering of Tzeirei Agudas Chabad Midwest on the eve of Rosh Chodesh Nisan – 2 Nisan, may Hashem be upon you for life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
Two of the foundations of the Baal Shem Tov’s teachings, which are further explained in Chabad Chassidus, are that every detail and occurrence in a person’s life is by Divine Providence, and that from every matter one must derive a lesson in serving Hashem.
This is especially true regarding such an important event as the gathering of Tzeirei Agudas Chabad Midwest, which takes place on the yahrzeit-hilulah of the Rebbe Rashab—the father of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—of blessed memory. And it is also on Erev Rosh Chodesh and Rosh Chodesh Nisan.
I wish to remind all participants in this gathering of the holy words of the Baal HaHilulah—that all words spoken by the leaders of Israel, especially those said publicly and printed, have eternal value, meaning, and effect: "All nations on earth must know that only our bodies were delivered into exile and subjugation to kingdoms; but our souls were never exiled nor given over to subjugation. We must declare openly for all to see that regarding our faith—Torah and mitzvos and Jewish customs—no one else has authority over us."
The Baal HaHilulah embodied this outlook and implemented it in daily life—both under the Czarist regime known for its decrees and persecutions against Jews, as well as during the years of the Communist regime with its anti-religious policy in general and anti-Jewish stance in particular.
This is also the central idea of the month of Nisan—the month of redemption. Because our ancestors in Egypt—the first exile and prototype for all subsequent exiles—did not adopt Egyptian ways but maintained their distinctiveness and uniqueness, they merited redemption from Egypt and the Exodus.
How much more so now that we find ourselves in a land of rest and religious freedom—it is both our duty and privilege to strengthen and expand authentic Judaism—Torah, mitzvos, and Jewish customs—illuminated and enlivened according to Chabad Chassidus’ instructions. This depends solely on our will. You can do it; it only requires that you truly want to.
May it be Hashem’s will that this gathering fulfills its tasks tangibly and fully—in line with the inner intent and explicit directive of our holy Rebbeim. Their merit—and the merit of many—will surely stand by each individual for outstanding success in communal work—and consequently also in personal matters—both materially and spiritually together.
With blessings for success and good tidings.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that every event holds a lesson for serving Hashem. He urges strengthening Jewish identity through Torah observance inspired by Chassidus—even more so when living with religious freedom—and assures participants that their efforts bring both communal and personal blessing.
