Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 22nd of Tevet, in which you write about your ailment—stuttering in speech—and that you have already consulted a doctor but it did not help.

It is somewhat surprising, for there are expert doctors in this field who have various methods and treatments, and surely they will also find one suitable for you.

I must add that the main point is that generally this depends to an important degree on self-confidence and the state of one's nerves. Therefore, the recommended advice—even when undergoing some treatments—is for a person to strengthen himself in the trait of bitachon (trust), which is the foundation of our faith: trust in Hashem Yisbarach, Who is the Creator of the world and its Guide, Who watches over every individual with individual Divine Providence and is inherently good. This is understood from the pleasant words of Israel's sweet singer: 'Hashem Li Lo Ira' ("G‑d is with me; I will not fear"), which negates embarrassment before those around him. There is strong hope that Hashem will guide him for good before Him. The more one engraves in his understanding that he stands before Melech Malchei HaMelachim Hakadosh Baruch Hu (the King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He), the less he will worry about what those standing near him might say about his manner of speech, and his speech will improve naturally—especially together with treatment.

Additionally, another point: when coming to a word and fearing he cannot pronounce it properly, he should not fight with himself to say specifically that word; rather, he should substitute it with another expression or similar alternative.

Since everything requires Heavenly assistance, it follows that he should increase diligence and persistence in Torah study and enhance fulfillment of its mitzvos with beauty—for nothing stands in the way of willpower.

Blessings for good news in all the above,
In the name of His Honor, my master and teacher the Rebbe shlita,
Secretary

P.S. Surely you set aside a few coins for tzedakah every weekday before morning prayers, and you also keep up with reciting your daily portion of Tehillim as divided according to the days of the month—even on Shabbos and Yom Tov after morning prayers.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that overcoming challenges like speech difficulties involves both practical efforts—such as seeking expert help—and inner work on self-confidence and trust in Hashem. Strengthening Torah study and mitzvah observance brings added blessing to these efforts.
